Skyhawks sweep doubles to spur non-conference win

EASTON, Mass. (September 19, 2012) – Stonehill College used a sweep of its three doubles matches to spur a 6-3 victory over Clark University in non-conference men's tennis action at Charles Watt Tennis Courts this evening.

Junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) led three double-winners for Stonehill, which swept the three doubles matches and then won at number four through six singles to claim the win. Hyzak combined with sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) for an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles before he went on to claim a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Clark sophomore Josh Burger (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) at No. 4 singles.

Senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) and junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) were also double winners for Stonehill. Martin teamed up with sophomore Jared Drzal (West Sayville, Conn./Sayville) for an 8-6 decision at No. 2 doubles before he posted a 6-4, 6-0 triumph over Clark freshman Fernando Pinoargote (Guayaquil, Ecuador) at No. 5 singles. Armstrong cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles over sophomore Joel Simonson (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) after combining with sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) for a 9-7 win at No. 3 doubles.

Senior Diego Angel (Lima, Peru), junior Daniel Stein (Newton, Mass./Newton North) and freshman Antoine Martin (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) also claimed singles wins to earn the three points for Clark. Angel topped Ringstad 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, with Stein edging Alaimo 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 at No. 2 and Martin defeating freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3.

Stonehill (3-0, 2-0 NE-10) is back in action on Friday when it visits Chestnut Hill College for a big early season regional clash at noon. The Skyhawks will then participate in the ITA East Regional held at the Arthur Ash Center in Philadelphia Saturday through Monday. Stonehill returns home on Saturday, September 29, when it hosts Saint Michael's College for an NE-10 matchup at 11 a.m.
