Bottom half of lineup carries Skyhawks to victory
ORLANDO, Fla. (March 8, 2013) – Stonehill College closed out its spring break trip with a 6-3 victory over Cedarville (Ohio) University in non-conference men's tennis action at Fort Gatlin Tennis Center this afternoon.
Junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) were double-winners to lead Stonehill to the victory. Alaimo cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Cedarville senior Quinton Paul (Katy, Texas) at No. 3 singles after teaming up with sophomore Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Armstrong rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles over senior Josh Van Zandt (Edgewater, Fla./New Smyrna Beach) after combining with sophomore Jonathan Sanders (Holbrook, N.Y./St. Anthony's) for a 9-7 triumph at No. 3 doubles.
Senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) notched a point for Stonehill with his 6-2, 6-1 win over sophomore Adam Levesque (Bowdoin, Maine/Mount Ararat) at No. 4 singles. Sophomore Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) claimed a 6-3, 6-2 win over junior Jared Gerber (Pella, Iowa/Pella) at No. 6 singles.
Senior Aaron Niemiec (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) and sophomore John Filcik (Holland, Mich./Zeeland East) were double-winners for Cedarville. The teammates combined for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and then Niemiec rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles over sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic). Filcik also topped Hyzak in a back and forth 7-6 (14-12), 5-7, 10-7 matchup at No. 2 singles.
Stonehill (9-2, 3-0 NE-10) returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m. Cedarville (2-7) hosts West Virginia State on Thursday at 3 p.m.
