Stonehill Edges American International, 5-4

Klados and Armstrong lead Skyhawks to second-straight 5-4 win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 23, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) East Regional rankings released on Wednesday, edged American International College 5-4 in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action at Central High School this afternoon.

Junior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and freshman Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) led Stonehill to its second-straight 5-4 victory as double winners. The duo combined to post an 8-2 victory at No. 3 doubles as the Skyhawks claimed a 2-1 advantage after doubles play. Klados clinched the win with his 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 comeback win over American International senior Jakub Simicek (Treneianska Turna, Slovakia) at No. 4 singles. Armstrong rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles over sophomore Chandler Long (Point Lookout, N.Y.).

Senior Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien) picked up a point for Stonehill with his 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5 singles over sophomore Jason Popek (Hamilton, Ontario). Junior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) and sophomore Thomas Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) teamed up for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

Freshmen Cass Schwab (Yverdon-les-Bains, Switzerland) and Kenzo Kauffmann (La Croix, Switzerland) were double-winners to lead American International. They combined for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and then Schwab topped sophomore Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) at No. 1 singles. Kauffmann also defeated Alaimo at No. 3 singles, 6-3, 7-5. Freshman Thijs Bik (Sassenheim, The Netherlands) also claimed a point for the Yellow Jackets with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Hyzak at No. 2 singles.

Stonehill (12-4, 5-1 NE-10) is right back in action tomorrow when it hosts Roger Williams University for a non-conference clash at 3 p.m. American International (0-1, 0-1 NE-10) hosts Bentley University on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
