Men's Hockey Drops Weekend Opener at Alaska Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alas. (March 1, 2024) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped a 9-3 decision to Alaska Anchorage at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex Friday night. With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to 2-31 overall, while the Seawolves improve to 13-16-2 on the season.

Highlights

  • Junior Jake Cady led the Skyhawks with two goals on the night, while freshman Anthony Galante lit the lamp on his fifth of the season.
  • Freshman Conor Ronayne dished out his fifth assist of the year on Galante's third period goal.
  • Junior Gavin FitzPatrick and sophomore Dylan Meilun split time in between the pipes for Stonehill where they tallied a combined 35 saves.
  • The Seawolves scoring output was fueled by senior Ben Almquist who finished with a hat trick, while freshman Riley Thompson added two goals and an assist of his own.
  • Junior Maximilion Helgeson dished out three assists on the night, while freshman Karter McNarland and junior Porter Schachle each registered a pair of helpers.
  • Sophomore netminder Jared Whale picked up his ninth win of the season inside the crease for UAA after stopping 19 of his 22 shots faced on the night.

How it Happened

  • Almquist got the scoring started for UAA at the 5:21 mark of the first before sophomore Davis Goukler would double the advantage on the scoreboard at the 14:18 mark.
  • However, less than 30 seconds after the second lamp lighter of the period, Cady would find the back of the cage for his first goal of the night and third of the season to cut the deficit in half.
  • Despite being a man down on the ice, the Seawolves continued to apply offensive pressure in the first, scoring a shorthanded goal off the stick of Thompson at the 16:45 mark to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
  • UAA continued its momentum going into the second as the Seawolves tacked two goals on the board off the sticks of Almquist (5:48) and freshman Aiden Westin (7:38) in the opening 10 minutes of the middle frame.
  • The Skyhawks would crack the scoresheet again at the 10:02 mark of the second as Cady lit the lamp on his second goal of the night.
  • The Seawolves would add two more goals throughout the remainder of the middle frame to take a commanding 7-2 lead into the final break.
  • In the third, both sides would trade goals throughout the final 10 minutes of regulation, as the Seawolves would eventually skate to a 9-3 victory against Stonehill.
