Men's Hockey Defeated by #13 Providence College, 7-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 13, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell to nationally ranked Providence College, 7-1, Friday night at Schneider Arena.

Highlights

  • Senior Nick Poisson and sophomore duo of Bennett Schimek and Jaroslav Chmelar scored their team-leading second goals of the season.
  • Graduate student pairing of Cal Kiefiuk and Jamie Engelbert as well as sophomore Brady Berard scored their first goals of the year, while freshman Tanner Adams found the back of the net for the first time of his young career.
  • Sophomore goaltender Philip Svedback and freshman netminder Marcus Brannman split time in between the pipes for the Friars, stopping a combined five of six shots on goal.
  • Sophomore forward Frank Ireland scored his first goal of the season and 18th of his career off sophomore defender William Tripp's first assist on the young campaign.
  • Sophomore goaltender Dylan Meilun finished with a career-high 54 saves in net for the Skyhawks.  

How it Happened

  • Meilun kept the Skyhawks in the game through the opening 20 minutes of action, only allowing one goal on 20 shots faced in the first period.
  • However, Providence came out of the first intermission strong, scoring two goals in the opening four minutes of the second before adding one more goal at 11:23 mark of the middle frame.
  • The Friars furthered their advantage in the third period, tacking three more goals on the board throughout the final minutes of regulation.
  • However, with eight seconds remaining in the contest, the Skyhawks would pull a goal back after breakout pass to Ireland from Tripp found its way to the back of the net, bringing the final score to 7-1.
