Men's Hockey Falls to LIU, 7-3, in Home Opener

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (October 14, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped its home opener, 7-3, to Long Island University (LIU) Saturday night.

Highlights

  • Graduate student Remy Parker led the Sharks offensive attack, recording three points on the night with a pair of goals and an assist.
  • Graduate student Grayson Constable netted his team-leading third goal of the season, while junior Chris Pappas as well as sophomore duo of Josh Zary and Cade Mason tallied their first goals on the year for LIU.
  • Junior netminder Rico DiMatteo earned his first win after stopping 26 of 29 shots faced in goal for the Sharks.
  • Sophomore forward Frank Ireland scored his second goal of the season and 19th of his career, while freshmen Dominick Campione and Joseph Grainda each recorded their first career goals.
  • Freshmen duo of Conor Ronayne and Devon Carlstrom dished out their first career assists, while junior Kyle Heath distributed his first of the young season.
  • Junior goaltender Gavin FitzPatrick tallied 31 saves in net during his first start of the season for the Skyhawks.

How it Happened

  • LIU wasted little time applying offensive pressure, scoring the games opening goal 1:29 into the opening frame before adding two more on the board at the 7:10 and 16:19 mark of the first.

    scramble in front of the LIU net to get the Skyhawks on the board and cut the deficit to two goals heading into the first intermission.
  • Stonehill came back out onto the ice strong to start the second period as Ireland scored the Skyhawks second goal of the game after receiving a cross ice pace from Ronayne to close the gap to just one.
  • However, both sides would trade goals back and forth throughout the remainder of the middle frame, playing to 5-3 score heading into the third period.
  • LIU regained its early momentum in the final frame of regulation, scoring a pair of goals and sealing the 7-3 victory in favor of the Sharks.

Stonehill (0-3-0) returns to action on Friday at 7:05 P.M., for the first game of a two-game weekend series at Bentley University. LIU (1-3-0) faces off against Colorado College next Friday and Saturday.
