LIU Power Play Fuels, 8-2, Victory Over Men's Hockey

EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (January 19, 2024) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped its series opener on the road to familiar opponent Long Island University, 8-2, Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to 0-23 overall, while the Sharks improve to 9-14-1 on the year.

Highlights

  • Senior captain Max Pineo and freshman Justin Barker each scored their second goals of the season.
  • Senior Nolan FitzPatrick along with sophomore duo William Tripp and Dean Schwenninger registered assists on the afternoon.
  • Junior netminder Gavin FitzPatrick tallied 35 saves in between the pipes for Stonehill. It marked his fifth consecutive game in net with 33+ saves.
  • Sophomore Isaiah Fox and junior Chris Pappas led the Sharks on the afternoon with three points off a goal and two assists each.
  • Senior Jack Quinn lit the lamp on his first goal of the season for LIU.
  • Freshman goaltender Noah Rupprecht picked up his third straight win in goal, stopping 19 of his 21 shots faced.

How it Happened

  • LIU wasted little time getting the scoring started as Quinn scored his first of the season just over four minutes into the contest.
  • The Sharks would extend their lead to two goals at the 7:25 mark of the first after points leader Fox netted his ninth of the year on the power play.
  • Coming out of the first intermission, LIU would continue their offensive momentum, scoring four goals – three being on the power play – throughout the opening 10 minutes of the middle frame.
  • However, Stonehill would respond, finding the back of the net on a five-on-three advantage after Pineo one-timed a shot over Rupprecht's left shoulder in the net.
  • Junior Henri Schreifels scored with 3:03 left in the second. However, the lamp lighter would be waved off due to a goaltender interference call, causing Stonehill to trail LIU 6-1 heading into the third period.
  • After a scoreless first 12 minutes of action in the final frame of regulation, the Sharks would light the lamp for their sixth and seventh power-play goals to extend their lead to as much as 8-1.
  • Barker would cap off the scoring for Stonehill, netting his second career goal shorthanded at the 17:26 mark of the third.
  • Despite the late special teams' goal for the Skyhawks, the LIU advantage grew too much, as Stonehill eventually fell by a final score of 8-2.
