Men’s Basketball Ends 2023-24 Season at CCSU

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (March 2, 2024) – Stonehill College men's basketball concludes its 2023-24 season, dropping its regular season finale against Central Connecticut State at Detrick Gym Saturday afternoon, 79-67, in a Northeast Conference matchup.

LEADERS

  • Graduate student Max Zegarowski (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored a game-high 19 points on 8-14 shooting while going 3-6 from deep in his final game as a Skyhawk.
  • Freshman Todd Brogna (Southborough, Mass.) led the Skyhawks with eight rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.
  • Allan Jeanne-Rose and Jayden Brown each scored 19 points while Brown had eight rebounds to lead the Blue Devils in the win.

FIRST HALF

  • CCSU began the game on a 10-2 run but the Skyhawks responded with a 14-4 run of their own to go ahead 16-14.
  • Zegarowski and Brogna converted on layups to keep Stonehill in front, 20-19, but that would be the final lead of the game for the Skyhawks as CCSU outscored the Skyhawks 23-5 to end the first half.
  • At the break, the Blue Devils led 42-25 as they shot the ball 55.2% (16-29) while Stonehill hit at a 42.9% (12-28) clip in the first half.

SECOND HALF

  • The Skyhawks fell behind by 24, 60-36, with 12:08 remaining in the game before going on a 15-0 highlighted by three long-range baskets from Zegarowski to make the score 60-51 with under eight minutes to play.
  • That would be as close as Stonehill would get as CCSU countered with a 9-2 run, eventually building its lead back up to 18 points, 74-58.
  • The final score would end up at 79-67 as the Skyhawks fall to the one-seeded Blue Devils who will have home-court advantage during the NEC tournament.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Stonehill falls to 7-29 in the all-time series with Central Connecticut State. The Skyhawks are now 1-13 at Detrick Gymnasium in New Britain, Conn.
  • Zegarowski finishes his career with 766 points in 61 games at Stonehill, 1,438 career points in 121 games including his time at Franklin Pierce University.
  • Zegarowski also finishes the season as the team's leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 12.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.
  • Junior Neal Marquardt (Rockville Center, N.Y.) closed out the season by scoring a career-high nine points while matching his career-high of two assists.
  • Sophomore Charlie Diamantis (Milford, Conn.) scored his first collegiate points with a corner three in the closing seconds.
