Wagner Upends Men’s Basketball in NEC MLK Day Matchup

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (January 15, 2024) Stonehill men's basketball traveled to the Spiro Sports Center Monday for a Northeast Conference matchup at Wagner, falling in a low-scoring affair, 64-54, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

LEADERS

  • Senior Thatcher Stone (Winchester, Mass.) and sophomore Chas Stinson (Charlotte, N.C.) each tallied 11 points to lead Stonehill. Stinson also corralled seven boards to lead the team.
  • Graduate student Max Zegarowski (South Hamilton, Mass.) knocked down three long-range buckets, scoring nine points while leading the team with three assists and one steal.
  • Wagner was led by guard Javier Ezquerra who had game-highs of 16 points, six assists, and four steals. Ezquerra played 39 minutes, hitting on six of his 11 shot attempts while going 3-5 from deep.

FIRST HALF

  • For the second game in a row, fifth-year Pano Pavlidis (Queens, N.Y.) scored the opening basket of the game with a strong finish at the rim.
  • Wagner scored the next nine points before a 9-2 run from Stonehill gave the Skyhawks an 11-10 lead with 9:05 to play in the half.
  • The Seahawks responded with a 9-0 run before Zegarowski and Stone helped Stonehill keep it close with a pair of baskets as Wagner led 19-16.
  • A second Zegarowski three-pointer would be the final points of the half for the Skyhawks as the Seahawks went into the break leading 32-19.

SECOND HALF

  • Stonehill outscored Wagner 12-10 during the first five minutes of the second half as the Skyhawks stayed within 11 points of the Seahawks, 42-31.
  • Wagner would build a 21-point lead, making five straight shot attempts including two three-pointers to take their largest lead of the night at 54-33.
  • The Seahawks held a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, closing out the win, 64-54, after a late run from the Skyhawks got them within 10 but it was too late in the contest.

  • Stonehill drops to 2-3 all-time against Wagner and drop to 1-2 against the Seahawks in NEC play after splitting last season's regular season series.
  • Stonehill is now 0-2 when playing at the Spiro Sports Center and 1-3 overall in Staten Island.
  • The Skyhawks have used 11 different starting lineups through 19 games this season, this being the first time in six games that they used the same lineup in back-to-back games.
  • Stonehill's 11 different starting lineups are tied for the third most in the country at the Division I level, trailing only Furman (13) and Detroit Mercy (12).
  • Stone's 11 points mark a season-high for the senior and is his first game in double-figures this season, a mark he hit four times last season.
  • Stinson continued his strong work on the glass today, leading the team in rebounds for the seventh time over eight straight starts, averaging 7.0rpg over that stretch.
  • Stinson also scored 11+ points for the fifth consecutive game and has now reached double-figures in five straight games.

UP NEXT

  • Stonehill continues Northeast Conference play at Merkert Gymnasium on Friday, Jan. 19 at 5 p.m. as FDU comes to Easton, Mass. The game will be televised nationally on CBS Sports Network.
