Men’s Basketball Defends Home Court with Win Over Hartford

EASTON, Mass. (December 17, 2023) – Stonehill College men's basketball ended its 10-game losing streak with a 71-44 win over the University of Hartford at Merkert Gymnasium Sunday afternoon.

LEADERS

  • Sophomore Tony Felder (Brockton, Mass.) and fifth-year Pano Pavlidis (Queens, N.Y.) each tallied 15 points to lead all scorers.
  • Sophomore Chas Stinson (Charlotte, N.C.) and Pavlidis corralled six boards each to lead the Skyhawks.
  • Felder also had a game-high four assists and four steals as he was on the floor for 16 minutes.
  • Pavlidis had an impressive day on the defensive end, swatting three shots for a new season-high mark.
  • Josh Petion led Hartford with 11 points and six rebounds, logging 23 minutes off the bench.

FIRST HALF

  • Graduate student Max Zegarowski (South Hamilton, Mass.) scored the opening basket on a driving layup, sparking a 12-0 run for the Skyhawks to begin the game. Freshman Louie Semona (Cincinnati, Ohio) knocked down two three-pointers, accounting for half of the Stonehill scoring.
  • Back-to-back threes from the Hawks got Hartford on the board but a pair of free throws and a layup from Stinson kept Stonehill ahead by 14.
  • The Skyhawk lead got up to 18 at its highest in the first half as Felder spun home a driving layup for his sixth point of the game with Stonehill ahead 24-6 with 8:47 remaining in the half.
  • Pavlidis drilled a long-range shot for the Skyhawks as he led the team in first-half scoring, putting up nine points through the first 20 minutes.
  • Stonehill went into the locker room ahead 35-21, shooting 48.1% from the floor (13-27). The Skyhawks held Hartford to a 29.6% shooting clip (8-27) in the first half.
  • Pavlidis had 11 first-half points and was a +14 on the court in 16 minutes of action.

SECOND HALF

  • Pavlidis carried his momentum in the second half, scoring the first two points with a layup in the paint.
  • The Skyhawks got off to a roaring start through the first seven minutes of second-half action, outscoring Hartford 20-2 as junior Nathan McGill (Dillsburg, Pa.) hit his first three-pointer since Nov. 9 to put Stonehill up 30 points, 55-25.
  • Seven different Skyhawks scored during the run as Stonehill had its largest lead of the season at 33 points, 62-29 with 8:26 remaining in the game.
  • The Hawks responded with a three-pointer from Henry Herman and began to cut into the Stonehill lead, going on a 13-6 run to make the score 68-42 with a little over three minutes remaining in the game.
  • That was the closest Hartford would get for the remainder of the game as the Skyhawks won the game 71-44, ending their 10-game losing streak.
  • Stonehill finished the game shooting 52% (26-50) from the field, its second-highest mark of the season. Hartford was held to just a 31.5% (17-54) shooting day.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Stonehill improves to 1-1 all-time against Hartford after losing last season's matchup in West Hartford, Conn., 73-56, on Jan. 25, 2023.
  • This was the first non-division I team on Stonehill's schedule this season and the first for the Skyhawks since a 92-45 win over Eastern Nazarene on Nov. 30, 2022, last season.
  • Stonehill is now 2-1 this season when leading at halftime as well as being 2-1 when shooting 50% or higher.
  • The Skyhawks hit the double-digit steal mark for the first time this season as Felder matched his career-high with four of the 10.
  • The Skyhawks have started seven different starting fives in 13 games this season.
  • Semona set a new career-high, scoring 10 points and knocking down two three-pointers for the third time in the last four games. He is shooting 50% (6-12) from deep over the four-game stretch.
  • Stinson led the Skyhawks on the glass for the second straight game, averaging 8.5 rebounds per game in back-to-back starts for the sophomore.
  • Junior Neal Marquardt (Rockville Center, N.Y.) blocked his first career shot and matched his career-high for the fourth time this season, scoring two points off the bench.
  • McGill tallied a season-high five points, making both of his shot attempts and hitting his first three-pointer since the Nov. 9 win over Army West Point.
  • Felder has scored 11+ points in nine of the past 10 games. Scored 15+ for the fourth time this season.
