Maguire posts goal and assist to lead Falcons to comeback win

WALTHAM, Mass. (September 20, 2012) – Stonehill College dropped its fourth one-goal game of the season as Bentley University rallied for a 2-1 victory in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action tonight.

Senior Beth Maguire (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) led Bentley back from an early one goal deficit as she played a role in both Falcon goals with a goal and assist. Sophomore Gina Lirange (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) scored the game-winning goal for Bentley with under ten minutes to play in regulation.

Senior Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) registered six saves in goal to give Bentley the chance to comeback from the early deficit. Stonehill posted a 12-7 advantage for shots in the contest, but the Falcons held the edge in penalty corners at 6-4.

Junior Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) scored the lone goal for Stonehill, while sophomore Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) finished with three saves in the Skyhawks cage.

Ingersoll gave Stonehill a quick lead when she blasted her team-leading seventh goal of the season off a stop at the top of the arc by senior Jessica Laurendeau (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) off a penalty corner from junior Kelsey Davis (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) 5:10 into the game. It marks Laurendeau's team-best fifth assist of the year.

Bentley equalized before halftime as Maguire netted her fourth goal of the year at 22:26 with a drive from the right side of the cage into the opposite corner. The game seemed headed for overtime, when Maguire connected with an open Lirange in front of the goal for her second goal of the year at 61:07.

The one goal defeat is the fourth in five setbacks for Stonehill this season, including each of the Skyhawks three games in the last six days with the last two by 2-1 score lines.

Stonehill (3-5, 0-2 NE-10) looks to get back on track on Saturday when it hosts Saint Michael's College for a non-conference matchup at W.B. Mason Stadium at noon. Bentley (4-3, 1-0 NE-10) visits Adelphi University on Saturday at 2 p.m.
