Three different Skyhawks net goals, Davis dishes two assists in win

EASTON, Mass. (September 12, 2012) – Stonehill College bounced back from a tough overtime defeat over the weekend to claim a 3-2 victory over Adelphi University in non-conference field hockey action at Motamed Field this afternoon.

Stonehill got goals from three different players, while junior Kelsey Davis (Gardner, Mass./Gardner) dished out two assists in the win. The Skyhawks goals came from senior Chelsea Fizell (Cotuit, Mass./The Berkshire School), junior Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and sophomore Jennifer Foley (Holden, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) as the Skyhawks won for the third time in four outings.

Senior Kaitlyn Curtis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) preserved the win for Stonehill with three saves. The Skyhawks finished with a 23-14 advantage for shots in the match, and edged Adelphi 13-7 for penalty corners.

Senior Cassie Cabral (Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) scored both Adelphi goals in the second half to get the Panthers back in the game after trailing 3-0. Freshman Molly Cuevas (San Jose, Calif./Leland) assisted on both Panther goals.

Freshman Kelly Serrao (Lake Hiawatha, N.Y./Parsippany) registered ten saves, including seven in the second half to give Adelphi the comeback chance.

Fizell put Stonehill on the scoreboard just 5:13 into the contest as she scored off a feed from Davis on a penalty corner for her first goal of the season. Ingersoll doubled the Skyhawks lead just over ten minutes later with a drive off a pass from senior Jessica Laurendeau (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) off a Davis corner pass at 15:55. It marks Ingersoll's team-leading sixth goal of the season.

Foley gave Stonehill a three goal lead just 1:09 into the second half when she knocked in a rebound for her first marker of the year. Adelphi wouldn't go down without a fight thanks to Cabral's two goals. She netted her first when she took a pass from Cuevas and bounced a shot in off a defender at 49:30. Cabral pulled the Panthers within a goal off another pass from Cuevas at 65:37, but Stonehill held strong from there to seal the win.

Stonehill (3-2, 0-0 NE-10) returns home on Saturday, to host Bellarmine University for a non-conference matchup on "National Field Hockey Day" at noon. Adelphi (0-6, 0-0 NE-10) visits the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday at 1 p.m.
