Stonehill Defeats Franklin Pierce, 4-1

Fizell leads Skyhawks to second straight win with two goals and an assist

EASTON, Mass. (September 24, 2012) – Stonehill College scored three first half goals and didn't look back in claiming a 4-1 victory over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Senior Chelsea Fizell (Cotuit, Mass./The Berkshire School) led Stonehill with two goals and an assist. Junior Devin Ingersoll (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and freshman Erika Kelly (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) also added goals for Skyhawks.

Sophomore Elizabeth Genovese (Street, Md./North Harford) registered four saves in goal for Stonehill without conceding a goal over the first 64:25 before yielding to senior Kaitlyn Curtis (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) for the final 5:35. Genovese extended her scoreless minute streak to 143:18. Stonehill finished with a 23-10 advantage for shots, including 18-3 in building its 3-0 halftime lead, and held a 12-8 edge for penalty corners, including 9-1 over the first 35 minutes.

Junior Chanelle Letarte (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) scored the lone for Franklin Pierce, snapping a streak of 486:05 and six-straight games without scoring a goal. Freshman Sara Cote (Athol, Mass./Athol) finished with eight saves in the Ravens cage.

Stonehill scored twice in the opening 6:36 of the game on its way to a 3-0 lead after just 15 minutes. Ingersoll opened the scoring with her team-leading eighth goal of the season when she took a pass from Fizell and fired a shot from the upper left corner of the arc past Cote 3:28 into the contest.

Fizell followed with her first of the game at 6:36 as she one-timed a rebound from the center of the scoring area into an open net. Kelly scored her second goal of the season at 15:10 with a drive through the goaltenders pads.

Fizell finished off the Stonehill scoring at 60:01 as she pounced on a loose ball in front of the cage and one-timed a shot into the left side of the net. Franklin Pierce got on the scoreboard at 66:05 when Letarte got a stick on a drive from the upper left corner of the arc by freshman Erin Trainor (Auburn, Mass./Auburn).

Stonehill (5-5, 1-2 NE-10) is off until Saturday when it hosts Merrimack College, ranked 8th in the most recent National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, at W.B. Mason Stadium at noon. Franklin Pierce (2-7, 0-2 NE-10) visits American International College on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
