Assumption Gets Past Baseball, 9-4

BROCKTON, Massachusetts (April 24, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team was unable to fight past Northeast-10 Conference foe Assumption College falling 9-4 at Campanelli Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Skyhawks are now 16-23 overall and 7-12 in NE10 Conference play, while the Greyhounds improve to 23-14 and 11-8 in Conference play.

With three scoreless innings behind them, Assumption was able to connect three hits for the first lead of the game after Stonehill kept them from scoring on a run down between third and home for the second out. The Greyhounds then saw Kevin Quinlivan single to center field for two RBI and a 2-0 lead before the side was retired with a groundout back to the pitcher.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ryan Abel doubled down the left field line with one out as Rob Duarte singled up the middle to cut the deficit to one, 2-1.

The Greyhounds saw the bases loaded for the first time all game in the top of the seventh after one hit and two walks, but with a ground out to second, the Skyhawks got out of the jam. Stonehill was able to tie the game at two, 2-2 in the bottom of the frame after Matthew Rocco stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher with two outs.


Lucier went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a double

On four walks, a hit by pitch, and one hit, Assumption regained a lead scoring four runs in the top of the eighth on a late game rally for a four-run lead, 6-2. Stonehill responded with one run in the bottom of the eighth as Abel and Duarte walked back-to-back to lead off the inning and with two outs Noah Lucier doubled down the right field line for the third run of the game, 6-3.

Assumption would not let up, as three more runs came across the plate in the top of the ninth for a 9-3 lead, as the Skyhawks saw three-straight singles to cut the deficit to five, 9-4. The Greyhounds retired the side with two strikeouts and a pop up to end the inning stranding two runners on base for Assumption's fourth-straight win.

Stonehill looks to bounce back as they travel to Rindge, New Hampshire for the final game of the series against Franklin Pierce University tomorrow, Wednesday, April 25 with a 3:30 p.m. first pitch.
