Magi hands Southern N.H. first NE10 Divisional loss of the season

TAUNTON, Massachusetts (April 13, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team handed No. 4 Southern New Hampshire University its first Northeast-10 Conference divisional loss with a 5-0 shutout in game two, while the Penmen were victorious in game one, 7-2, at Taunton High School on Saturday.
The Skyhawks are now 16-18 overall and 7-7 in NE10 Conference play, while the Penmen fall to 28-8 overall and 12-3 in Conference play.
Game 1: Stonehill 2 – Southern New Hampshire 7
After a scoreless first inning, the Penmen saw three runs cross home in the top of the second inning on two hits including a single from John Stanton and a triple from Idelson Taveras. The Skyhawks also allowed their first two walks of the game as Southern N.H. took a 3-0 lead.
The Penmen the bases loaded with one out in the third as the Skyhawks' defense got out of the inning with a double play. Stonehill cut the deficit to one, 3-2, as William Kelleher doubled to right field scoring Matthew Rocco and Harrison Sabo drove the ball to center field easily scoring Sabo in the bottom of the third.
Southern N.H. doubled their score with another three runs in the top of the fourth as Stanton walked with a Joshua Zbierski on third and he ended up scoring on the wild pitch for a two-run advantage, 4-2. With one out and runners on first and third, Joshua Goldstein poked a ball into left field for a one-run double. Alex Kennedy tallied his own RBI single adding to the score for a four-run lead, 6-2.
In the top of the fifth, the Penmen saw runners on first and second with two outs as Tom Blandini drove in one more run for a five-run advantage, 7-2. Stonehill threatened in each of the final three innings, stranding five on base as Southern N.H. won their third-straight game.
Game 2: Stonehill 5 – Southern New Hampshire 0
Junior Eddie Magi threw his first-career complete game striking out a career-high eight batters as the Skyhawks handed the Penmen their first NE10 Divisional loss of the season. This was also the second shutout for Stonehill on the season.

The Penmen left one on base in the first inning as the Skyhawks saw Rocco single up the middle for the first hit of the game. Magi retired three straight in the top of the second and the Skyhawks were able to see their first lead of the day as Patrick Downey launched a two-out two-run homerun over the left field fence for a two-run advantage, 2-0, for his third poke of the season. Magi continued executing as he combined for 13-straight outs.
In the bottom of the fifth, with two outs once again, Stonehill saw Kelleher send a long fly ball to center field for his 10th double of the season scoring Matt Farragher from second who led off the frame with a walk. Sabo was intentionally walked, bringing up Aidan Wilde who sent the ball far down the left field line for a two-run double, his seventh of the season giving the Skyhawks a five-run lead, 5-0.
Magi only gave up four hits all game, where once came in each of the eighth and ninth innings, but the Penmen threatened in the seventh inning as Magi walked two of three batters all game but the defense ended the inning with back-to-back outs.
Stonehill continues its nine-game home stand with a single game against No. 4 Southern New Hampshire University on Sunday, April 14 with a first pitch at 1:00 p.m. as the Skyhawks honor their seniors prior to the contest.
