EASTON, Massachusetts (April 6, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball split with Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at Lou Gorman Field in cross-divisional play with a win of 7-6 and a loss of 12-7.
With the second game of the doubleheader against the Owls, head coach Patrick Boen recorded his 1,000th game coached with the Skyhawks. He is just the second NE10 Conference coach to reach this milestone with Bentley University head coach Bob DeFelice the other coach with this mark. Boen is currently the third active third head coach in the East Region to tally 1,000 games coached, along with DeFelice and the Dominican (N.Y.) College head coach Rick Giannetti.
Game 1: Stonehill 7 – Southern Conn. 6
After the Owls put two runs on the board in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead off two hits, Stonehill responded in the bottom of the second to take over the lead with four runs off four hits and one error. Matt Donlan, Matt Rocco, and Harrison Sabo each knocked in a run, while Donlan scored off a failed pick-off attempt to score the fourth run for a two-run advantage, 4-2.
Stonehill was able to hold off the Owls for three innings as the Skyhawks tallied two more runs in the bottom of the third off Donlan's two-out two-run single up the middle for a four-run lead, 6-2. Both teams scored a run in each half of the fifth inning bumping up the score, 7-2.
The Owls were able to score a run in three of the four remaining innings cutting the deficit to one, 7-6, scoring off an error in the outfield in the sixth, off a wild pitch in the seventh, and a two out single to the shortstop with the bases loaded.
Patrick Downey was also able to tally more than one hit for the Skyhawks swinging 2-for-5 with two runs scored, and Sabo was the third Stonehill batter to register a multi-hit day batting 2-for-4 with one RBI and a walk. On the mound, Richard Ryan recorded his third win of the season and Jeremiah Vargas tossed 1.0 inning for his second save of the season.
Game 2: Southern Conn. 12 – Stonehill 7
Both teams started out scoreless through the bottom of the second inning, as the teams put a run on in each half of the third inning, 1-1. Southern Connecticut State University then totaled 11 runs in two innings off of seven hits and two errors, as the Skyhawks got out of back-to-back jams leaving two Owls on base in each inning opening up the game to a 11-run lead, 12-1.

The Skyhawks aimed to fight back in the remaining innings, as Sabo drove in the second run on a hard rope to left field with no outs and Rob Duarte grounded into a double play bringing home the third run for Stonehill, 12-3, in the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, Thomas Quinn led off the inning with his first homerun of the season and his second of his career over the left center fence, cutting the deficit to eight, 12-4. Later in the inning with two outs, Sabo connected once more with a high fly ball that dropped in between three fielders scoring two runs as the Skyhawks cut the advantage to six, 12-6.
Stonehill fought once more in the bottom of the ninth and with one out and runners on second and third, Noah Lucier sent a high fly ball to left field for a sacrifice fly, driving in the final run for the Skyhawks before Mike Ferrett retired the side with a ground out.
Stonehill hosts the University of New Haven tomorrow, Sunday, April 7 in another NE10 cross divisional doubleheader on Lou Gorman Field with a start time of noon.
