Peoples' game-high 20 points, Gilbert triple-double leads Blue Demons to victory

CHICAGO, Ill. (November 9, 2023) – DePaul University placed five players in double-figures and finished shooting nearly 50-percent from the floor in securing a 99-52 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference women's basketball matchup at Wintrust Arena tonight.

Postgrads Anaya Peoples, a transfer from the University of Notre Dame, and Katlyn Gilbert, a transfer from the University of Missouri, paced five from DePaul in double-figures on the night as the Blue Demons registered 24 steals on Stonehill turnovers, scoring nearly half their points off. Peoples scored a game-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting, with six rebounds, three steals and two assists, while Gilbert notched a triple-double with 12 points and game-highs of ten rebounds, ten steals and five assists.

Sophomore Kate Clarke, a transfer from Michigan, contributed 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting and seven boards, while freshman Summer Lee tallied 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Freshman Charlece Ohiaieri rounded out the Blue Demons in double-figures with ten points, four rebounds and two steals.

Freshman Brooke Paquette led a trio from Stonehill in double-digits with a season-high 13 points off the bench, with two rebounds, two assists and two steals. Senior Jada Thornton added 12 points and four rebounds, while postgrad Anna Boruta also scored 12 points and grabbed three boards. Junior Maureen Stapleton chipped in with a team-high seven rebounds.

Thornton scored Stonehill's first four points as the Skyhawks held an early edge, but after neither team scored for nearly three minutes, Indiana transfer Jorie Allen sparked a 25-point run for the Blue Demons to take control of the game on their way to a 27-7 lead after a quarter of play. DePaul scored 15 points off turnovers in the frame, holding the Skyhawks to 3-of-13 shooting in the quarter.

DePaul extended its lead to 34 in the second frame and coasted the rest of the way. Peoples scored 12 of her 20 points in the opening half, while Clarke had 11 of her 17 over the first 20 minutes to lead the Blue Demons.

Paquette scored ten of her season-best 13 in the second half for Stonehill on 4-of-8 shooting over the final 20 minutes, while Boruta had nine of her 12 in the closing half.

Noteworthy

  • Tonight marked the first meeting all-time between the two programs, with DePaul marking Stonehil's second Big East opponent over its first two seasons competing at the NCAA Division I level after visiting Providence College for its second game of the 2022-23 season.
  • It also marks the first game ever played in Chicago for the Skyhawks.
  • Paquette scored in double-figures for the first time in her collegiate career in just her second game.
  • Thornton and Boruta have both scored in double-digits in each of Stonehill's first two games.
