EASTON, Mass. (April 29, 2022)- The Stonehill College wrapped up its regular season with a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against Bentley University and split against the Falcons Friday afternoon at Father Gartland Field. In game one, the Skyhawks won on a walk-off in 10 innings, and in game two, the purple and white fell 6-0. During both games, Skylar Brandemarte and Kelly Mayette each recorded their 100th career strikeouts.

Game one: Stonehill 2, Bentley 1

Standout Performances

Key Moments:

  • After a scoreless four and a half innings, the Skyhawks were the ones who struck first in the bottom of the fourth when Brochu sent a single past second that allowed Dawes to score after she led off the inning with a triple to deep right.
  • For most of the game, Stonehill starter, Skylar Brandemarte kept the Falcons offense at bay as she did not allow a run through the first four innings. During her scoreless stretch, Brandemarte had retired six straight batters in the third and fourth innings which included three of her eight strikeouts.
  • Bentley ended up tying the contest in the top of the fifth when Katie Welch hit a solo home run to left-center.
  • For the next five innings, pitching kept both side in the game for their respective teams. Stonehill had a chance in the bottom of the sixth after Paige Wodarski had moved Maeve Proulx to third with one out. Despite having the winning run 90-feet away, Falcons pitcher, Payton Doiron retired the next two batters via lineout and a pop-up.
  • However, in the 10th inning, Stonehill had timely moments including a sacrifice bunt by Emily Nardelli that moved up Marissa Dwyer to third with just one out. In the next at-bat, Kelly laid down a perfect bunt in which the Bentley fielder could not throw out Dwyer for the Skyhawks' walk-off win.
  • Overall on the day, Brandemarte finished with eight strikeouts to bring her season total to 102. Brandemarte is now just the fifth pitcher in program history to have 100 strikeouts in a season and the first since 2019 when Katherine Rayner did so. Brandemarte is also just one of two freshmen (Megan Ruonavaara-2013) to earn the achievement.

  • In the next inning, Bentley added another run courtesy of an RBI single by Welch which made it 4-0 after three.
  • Stonehill had a chance in the bottom half of the fourth when Conte sent a single back up the middle with two outs. However, Bentley starter, Elise Pereira retired the next batter to end the threat.
  • The Falcons added two more runs (6-0) in the fourth inning which featured an RBI single from Jordan Krause
  • With already one out in the bottom of the seventh, Stonehill tried again to start a rally when Green sent a hard hit ball to short for the single which marked her first collegiate hit. However, Pereira ended the momentum as she retired the next two Skyhawk batters for the win.
  • Mayette had gotten the start for the final game of the season and in her seven innings of work, Mayette fanned four batters which brought her career total to 100 strikeouts. Overall on the year, set career bests in strikeouts (60), ERA (4.24), innings pitched (95.2), and complete games (10).
