EASTON, Mass. (April 24, 2022)- The Stonehill College softball team hosted another Connecticut team for a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader, this time taking on Southern Connecticut State University. Unfortunately, the Skyhawks came up short in both games, 7-0 and 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Father Gartland Field.

Game one: Stonehill 0, Southern Connecticut 7

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • Neither side plated any runs through the first three innings as Stonehill starter, Skylar Brandemarte kept the Owls at bay where she collected three of her six strikeouts on the day. Her six strikeouts marked the eighth time this season she recorded five or more strikeouts.
  • However, in the top of the fourth, the Owls broke the scoreless tie when Jacqueline Dumont sent a solo shot to left center for the 1-0 advantage.
  • Stonehill threatened in the bottom half of the frame when Alyssa Grossi drew a walk, but Southern Connecticut starter, Jessica Perucki, shut down the momentum when she induced an inning-ending strikeout.
  • In the last two innings, the Owls broke things open when it added on a total of six runs (7-0) that featured a two-run RBI double off the bat of Dumont in the seventh which made it 6-0 at the time.

Pitching Records:

Win: Southern Connecticut-Jessica Perucki (4-7)

Loss: Stonehill-Skylar Brandemarte (10-9)

Game two: Stonehill 0, Southern Connecticut 1

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • Game two was a pitcher's duel as neither side was able to score throughout the first five innings. Stonehill's starter, Kelly Mayette, shut down the Owls and escaped multiple jams too. Throughout the first four out of five innings, Southern Connecticut left at least one runner on base, but Mayette always found ways to escape the innings unharmed.
  • Stonehill nearly got on the board first in the bottom of the third after Kelly hit a single to center and then moved up on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Courtney Brochu drew a walk which now made it runners on first and second with two outs. Despite having two runners on, the Owls ended the threat when Southern Connecticut starter, Jazmyn Martinez generated a groundout to end the frame.
  • Eventually in the sixth, Southern Connecticut finally scored the game's first run when Jayden Delaporta hit a solo home run for the 1-0 advantage.
  • The Skyhawks had a chance in the bottom of the sixth when Paige Wodarski singled up the middle with two outs. However, Martinez ended any potential rally when retired the next batter that ended the sixth, and then in the seventh, she retired the side for the narrow win.

Pitching Records:

Win: Southern Connecticut-Jazmyn Martinez (8-8)

Loss: Stonehill-Kelly Mayette (3-12)
