Softball Edged By Franklin Pierce In Doubleheader, 4-3, 4-2

RINDGE, N.H. (March 27, 2022)-In two hard-fought games against Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference action, the Stonehill College softball team fell in both games 4-3 and 4-2 Sunday at Bisaccia Field.

Game one: Stonehill 3, Franklin Pierce 4

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • Stonehill struck right away in the top of the first when Wodarski ripped an RBI single past second base that scored Emily Nardelli after she had singled earlier in the frame. 
  • Franklin Pierce ended up responding though in the bottom half of the inning when Ashley Cangiano hit a sacrifice fly for the Ravens. 
  • However after Franklin Pierce tied things up, Stonehill starter, Kelly Mayette kept the Ravens at bay with four straight scoreless innings including a stretch where she retired ten straight batters. 
  • The Skyhawks retook the lead in the top of the fifth when Wodarski collected her second RBI on the day after an RBI single to right field which scored Nardelli (2-1) after an error by the Ravens catcher. Dawes drove in the second run of the inning (3-1) after a sacrifice fly to center and drove in Maeve Proulx.
  • Despite the two-run lead, Franklin Pierce utilized a three-run sixth for a one-run advantage (4-3) after Haley Bigwood hit a sacrifice RBI to right field for the go-ahead run. 
  • Stonehill threatened in the final inning when Alexa Adinolfi hit a single to center with two outs, but the Ravens retired the next batter to hold on for the 4-3 win. 
  • Even though Mayette was dealt with the loss, the senior struck out a career-high six batters in the game. It is now the third time in her last four games she has struck out four or more hitters.

Game two: Stonehill 2, Franklin Pierce 4

Key Moments:

  • In game two, Franklin Pierce struck first this time in the first inning with a two-run RBI from Ashley Cangiano.
  • Stonehill responded in the next inning and cut the deficit down to one (2-1) when Shannon Conte drove in Alexandra Hammond who had walked earlier that inning. 
  • Skylar Brandemarte kept the Skyhawks within striking distance for the next two innings as she kept the Ravens offense at bay which also included five of her seven strikeouts. It marked the second time this season the freshman pitcher has struck out at least seven hitters.  
  • During the top of the fifth, the purple and white tied things up at two after Dawes hit an RBI single and scored Proulx. 
  • However, at the bottom of the fifth,  Franklin Pierce reclaimed the lead with a two-run inning (4-2) that featured a home run by Gina Hinckley
