Softball Takes Game Two, 11-2, Splits Twin Bill with Southern N.H.

Perrone tosses 3.2 innings allowing one hit and giving up no runs in first win of season

HOOKSETT, New Hampshire (April 22, 2021) – The Stonehill College softball team (5-15, 4-12 NE10) split the final doubleheader of the four-game series against Southern New Hampshire University (8-8, 8-8 NE10) Thursday afternoon, finishing the series 2-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Southern N.H. got on board in the bottom of the first inning, as Alyssa Dimauro led off with a double to center field, and Chloe Griffin replaced her on base with a single and advanced to second on the throw, 1-0. Shannon Gifford then followed with the Penmen's second double of the game, replacing Griffin on base for a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Stonehill threatened but Southern N.H. retired the side stranding two Skyhawks on base. The Penmen doubled their score in the bottom of the frame, 4-0, as Bella Dickinson scored on a wild pitch and Bryn Garczynsk tagged up on a fly ball to left field.

Southern N.H. added two more runs for a 6-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth. Carbonnea blasted a solo homerun to lead off the inning and with two outs Griffin drove home Dickinson. Stonehill made a run in the top of the seventh as they cut the deficit to three, 6-3. With the bases loaded, Megan Weis scored on a passed ball, advancing the runners to second and third. On a fielding error by the Penmen's shortstop, Dwyer and Price scored but Stonehill stranded a runner on base before Southern N.H. retired the side.

Stonehill's offense came alive in the first three innings, as eight runs were spread across the frames. The Skyhawks led off the first with a double from Brochu and Theilgard replaced her on base with her own double, 1-0. Stonehill saw their third double of the inning from Hartman as she drove home Theilgard, 2-0, and then Azzato flew out to center field bringing home the third run of the inning, 3-0.

With one out in the top of the second, Dwyer blasted her second homerun of the season over the left field fence. After an error and a single from Hartman, the Skyhawks added four more runs, 7-0. Another Penmen error in the field, scored Perrone from second after tallying a double to lead off the top of the third, 8-10.

Southern N.H. kept the game going with a run in the bottom of the third, as Emily Critch flew out to center field scoring Chloe Griffin from third, 8-1. The Penmen kept the Skyhawks off base in the top of the fourth, as Stonehill stranded one runner and Southern N.H. cut the deficit to six, 8-2, on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth.

After two scoreless innings, the Skyhawks emerged once more, putting away three runs on five hits. Brochu led off the inning with a single to center and made her way around the bases scoring on Azzato's two-run double to right field, 10-2. Perrone recorded her second double of the day to score Hartman from third for an insurance run, 11-2. Stonehill retired Southern N.H. in the bottom of the sixth to hold on to the nine-run victory.

Stonehill hosts Franklin Pierce University this weekend for four contests, Saturday, April 24 – Sunday, April, 25 for their final home games of the regular season. Saturday, the Skyhawks will recognize their six seniors prior to the game, with a first pitch scheduled for noon.
