Softball Defeats Saint Michael’s, 5-2, Splits Doubleheader

EASTON, Massachusetts (April 15, 2021) – The Stonehill College softball team (4-14, 3-11 NE10) took game one of the doubleheader against Saint Michael's College (5-7, 5-7 NE10) with a score of 5-2, as the Purple Knights defeated the Skyhawks in game two, 3-1, Thursday afternoon on Fr. Gartland Field in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Saint Michael's put the first run on the board in the first inning, as Grace Trautman blasted a solo shot over the right field fence for a 1-0 lead. Stonehill quickly loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame and Azzato found a hole in left center for a bases clearing double giving the Skyhawks a two-run advantage, 3-1.

The Purple Knights threatened in the top of the fourth as Hannah Arruda doubled and Haley Waghorn singled, putting runners on the corners. Molly Adamo struck out a batter for the third out, one of two strikeouts on the day.

In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Ricker singled and Michelle Theilgard walked, as Hartman drove in the Skyhawks' fourth run of the game on a single to right center, 4-1. Theilgard advanced to third on an error by the center fielder putting runners on the corners, but the Purple Knights got out of the inning with a strikeout. Saint Michael's got a run back in the top of the sixth with a solo homerun from Arruda, 4-2.

Stonehill put the lead back at three, 5-2, as Alexa Adinolfi flew out to right field, bringing home Katelin Price from third. In the circle, Adamo earned her first-career win, as Mayette earned her first-career save.

Hammond drove in the Skyhawks' lone run in game two

Key Moments:

Saint Michael's once again got on top early, as they loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, as Arruda walked and scored Sadie Pratt, for the first run, 1-0. Jackie Cherry then grounded out to second, scoring Angelica Johns, 2-0. With the bases loaded for the third time in the inning, Jenica Botting singled to the pitcher, bringing home Grace Trautman for a three-run start, 3-0.

Stonehill's first hit came in the bottom of the second, as Hammond singled up the middle, but she was stranded on base. Mayette retired 13-straight Purple Knights from the first to the fifth innings, as the Skyhawks lone run came in the bottom of the fourth as Hammond drove in a run with the bases loaded, 3-1. Stonehill stranded three runners in the inning as they couldn't put anymore tallies up.

The Skyhawks threatened late in the seventh, but stranded runners on first and second as Stonehill split the four-game series with the Purple Knights.
