Softball Falls Twice to New Haven in Season Opener

Theilgard went 3-for-6 on the day with 2 runs scored

WEST HAVEN, Connecticut (March 13, 2021) – The Stonehill College softball team returned to the field after exactly 365 days of no games, where their 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19.  The Skyhawks battled non-divisional opponent the University of New Haven, falling twice in their season opening doubleheader with scores of 4-1 and 10-2 Saturday at UNH Softball Field.

Game 1: Stonehill 1 – New Haven 4

With one out in the bottom of the third, the Chargers' Ava Fitzmaurice launched the ball to the left field fence for a standup double, as Jovanna Hillman dropped the ball in to centerfield for an RBI single, 1-0. In the circle, Kelly Mayette got New Haven to strike out and fly out to end the inning.

Theilgard connected on her second single of the season and moved her way around the bases, as Dwyer recorded her first-career RBI single to tie the game, 1-1, in the top of the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the frame, the Chargers tallied three hits and scored two runs for a two-run advantage, 3-1. New Haven got runners on first and third, as Melissa Bike's single to left center gave them a 2-1 lead. The Chargers got the bases loaded for the first time in the game, and Mya Case's RBI sacrifice fly to left field scored Ashley Veisz from third, 3-1. Julia Perrone retired the side with a ground out and a foul out.

Fitzmaurice sent the ball to deep centerfield for the second out in the bottom of the sixth inning, but drove Case home from third after she tripled to right center field to give the Chargers a three-run lead, 4-1.

Key Moments:

With one out in the first, Ricker bunted and advanced to third on Theilgard's first double of the season. After a second out, Ricker crossed home plate for the Skyhawks' first run of the game on a fielder's choice, 1-0. Perrone then singled to right field with two outs driving in Theilgard from third for a two-run advantage.

The Chargers jumpstarted the bottom of the first inning with a double to left field from Case. Then Veisz connected on a long ball to right field making her way to third, driving in two runs to tie the game, 2-2. Morgan Fisher's sacrifice fly to left field easily scored Veisz for their first lead of the game, 3-2.

New Haven totaled four runs off five hits in the bottom of the second extending the Chargers' lead to five, 7-2. The inning included an RBI double from Bike and Case and an RBI single from Emily Bump and Hillman. The Skyhawks held the Chargers to only one run in the bottom of the third off a throwing error extending the lead, 8-2.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Chargers capitalized on another error to put another tally on the board, 9-2, and then Fisher recorded her first RBI of the day on a sacrifice fly, scoring Fitzmaurice for the game-winning tun, 10-2.
