Softball Splits Twin Bill With AIC, Earns First Win of Season

Hartman went 3-for-8 with the game-winning hit in game two

SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts (March 14, 2021) – The Stonehill College softball team picked up their first win of the season in the second game of the doubleheader with a 4-3 victory in eight innings. The Yellow Jackets edged the Skyhawks in game one for their first win of the season, 7-6, Sunday at Judy Goff Field in Springfield, Massachusetts

The Yellow Jackets bats were active in the bottom of the first, as five runs came across home off of five hits, including a 3-run double down the left field line from Alexis Jimenez for a 5-0 start. The Skyhawks squeezed across one run in the top of the second on an RBI single from Bennett to cut the deficit to four, 5-1.

Stonehill continued battling in the top of the third, as they put two tallies on board, 5-3. With one out, Perrone doubled and later in the inning with two outs, Hartman doubled driving in Gianna Azzato and Perrone. In the top of the fourth, Stonehill came within one, 5-4, off an error bringing home Bennett from third.

The Skyhawks kept the Yellow Jackets off the board for three-straight innings, before they added two runs to their lead, 7-4, on two hits in the fifth. Stonehill matched American International's two runs, with two of their own in the top of the sixth. In a bases loaded situation, Azzato reached first on an error and Michelle Theilgard and Katelin Price snuck home, 7-6, before the Yellow Jackets stranded two in the bottom of the frame and retired three-straight in the top of the seventh.

Key Moments:

Stonehill saw its first lead of the season, as they put up a run in the top of the second inning. With two outs and a runner on second base, Azzato reached on an error scoring Dwyer from second, 1-0. American International did not put a run across until the sixth inning, as they only were able to threaten the Skyhawks in the fifth leaving the bases loaded.

Hammond picked up her first-collegiate RBI, bringing home Dwyer from third to extend the Skyhawks' lead to two, 2-0. In the top of the fifth, Perrone reached on an error and Ricker crossed home for Stonehill's third run of the game, 3-0.

The Yellow Jackets' Kacie Allison launched her first homerun of the season with two outs to tie the game with runners on first and third, 3-3. The seventh remained scoreless and both teams went into their first extra inning game of the season. American International fended off the Skyhawks by getting two quick outs in the top of the eighth, but Hartman's single and an error scored Bennett from second for the go-ahead run, 4-3. The Yellow Jackets persisted as they loaded the bases, but Stonehill was able hold back American International and secure their first win of the season.

Stonehill will open Northeast-10 Conference play as they host Bentley University on Saturday, March 20 and Sunday, March 21 for two doubleheaders. Both games will at noon and 2:30 p.m. on Fr. Gartland Field.
