Softball Drops A Pair to Bentley

Hartman tallies first homerun of the season, bats 3-for-6 in doubleheader

EASTON, Massachusetts (March 31, 2021) – The Stonehill College softball team (2-6, 1-3 NE10) fell to Bentley University (2-2, 2-2 NE10) with scores of 8-6 in eight innings and 8-0 in five innings Wednesday afternoon at Fr. Gartland Field in Northeast-10 Conference play.

Game 1: Stonehill 6 – Bentley 8 (8 innings)

Bentley put four runs on the board in the top of the first off five hits. With two outs, the Falcons as Ella Hillier double and soon cross home on a single from Kaylee Mankins. Lea Thompson and Katherine Hess singled, as well, driving in three more runs, 4-0. In the bottom of the frame, Stonehill fought back scoring three runs on three hits, starting with Hannah Ricker's double to left field on one out. On a ground out, Ricker scored, 4-1, and then Hartman sent a long ball over the left field fence for her first homerun of the season, 4-3.

After two scoreless innings, Stonehill tied the game, 4-4, with a solo blast from Dwyer, her first-collegiate homerun. The Falcons' Hillier put Bentley back on top, 5-4, with her own homerun to left field in the top of the fifth inning.

In the top of the seventh, Bentley's Thompson drove the ball out to left field, scoring Mankins from third, after she reached third on an error following her double, putting the Falcons up two, 6-4. Theilgard kept the Skyhawks in the game, as sent out her second homerun of the season and 12th of her career to tie the game, 6-6, with two outs.

Stacey Korotsky bunted with one out in the top of the eighth and runners on the corners, bringing home Katherine Noftall for a one-run advantage, 7-6. But with two outs, the Falcons gave it one more go-around, scoring Lindsey Allen with the bases loaded from Mankins' third hit of the day, 8-6. Bentley fended off Stonehill in the bottom of the eighth, retiring three straight batters for their first win of the season.

With a scoreless first inning, Bentley found a way to put three runs on the board on three hits, including one of two of Mankins' homeruns. Noelani Rivera also connected on a sacrifice fly to center field with runners in scoring position, and Sam Petow hit a hard grounder for another run and a 3-0 lead in the top of the second.

In the top of the third, Mankins drove home two runs on a double to right field, extending the Falcons' lead to five, 5-0. Allen and Hillier also contributed as they singled in the top of the fourth to put two more runs up for a seven-run advantage, 7-0. Mankins connected for her second homerun of the game in the top of the fifth for the game-winning run to lead off the inning, 8-0. Stonehill's saw two hits from Theilgard, and one from Brochu, Hartman, Gianna Azzato, and Dwyer, as the Falcons stranded them each on base to hold on for the win.
