Diamond's straight sets win at No. 6 singles knotted the match at 4-4

Tracy leads pair of double-winners, claiming deciding point at No. 1 singles

NORTON, Mass. (February 17, 2019) – Wheaton College used a sweep of doubles play to fuel a 5-4 victory over Stonehill College in non-conference men's tennis action inside Beard Fieldhouse this evening.

Freshman Ian Tracy led Wheaton as a double-winner, providing the match-clinching point with his 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2) comeback triumph over Stonehill sophomore Trent Newman at No. 1 singles. Tracy also led a sweep of the three doubles matches that keyed the win, teaming up with sophomore Javier Esteban de Celis for an 8-6 decision over Newman and junior Samuel Miller at No. 1.

Junior Jorge Aguirre Martinez was also a double-winner for Wheaton, combining with senior Jeremiah Ryser for an 8-7 (10-8) victory at No. 3 doubles. Aquirre Martinez followed that up with a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 comeback win at No. 5 singles against Stonehill freshman Juan Camilo Riano Rojas that pulled the Lyons within a point of the win. Freshman David Hernaez Sanz and junior Ned Roosevelt closed out the doubles sweep with another tiebreaker triumph at No. 2, 8-7 (7-4).

Junior Aaron Diamond capped Stonehill's comeback from the 3-0 deficit after doubles play when his 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles against Wheaton junior Zachary Strempel knotted the match at four points apiece, with Newman and Tracy in the third set. Miller earned the Skyhawks first point with his 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles against Esteban de Celis, while sophomore Russell White and freshman Vincent Huynh added wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (3-1, 0-0 NE10) is back on the courts next Sunday, February 24, when it hosts Colby-Sawyer College for a non-conference match in the Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex at 1 p.m. Wheaton (3-0, 0-0 NEWMAC) visits Bates College on Saturday, March 2, at 3 p.m.
