Huynh leads Skyhawks as double-winner, posts match clinching point at #4 singles

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 6, 2019) – Stonehill College swept doubles play and the took the bottom three singles positions to claim a 4-3 victory over Saint John's (Minn.) University in non-conference men's tennis action at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Campus this afternoon.

Freshman Vincent Huynh was a double-winner to lead Stonehill to its second-straight win. He and freshman Luke Mendoza combined to clinch the doubles point, leading a sweep of the doubles matches, with their 6-3 decision at No. 2 doubles. Huynh then provided the match-clinching point in a third-set super-tiebreaker at No. 4 singles against St. John's senior Hunter Krebsbach 6-1, 6-7 (7-4), 10-5.

Senior Jonah Punnoose knotted the match at 1-1 with his 6-2, 6-2 win for St. John's at No. 3 singles against Stonehill sophomore Russell White. Junior Aaron Diamond and freshman Juan Camilo Riano Rojas then gave Stonehill a 3-1 lead with their singles wins. Riano Rojas breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles against junior Jarod Swododa, before Diamond defeated junior Jess Hansen 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6.

Junior Samuel Miller and sophomore Trent Newman, along with White and sophomore Aleksander Lazowski each teamed up to complete Stonehill's doubles sweep, with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively.

Senior Ryan Meger and sophomore Thomas Gillach also earned singles wins for St. John's.   

Stonehill (6-2, 0-0 NE10) wraps up its spring break schedule tomorrow against Cedarville University of Ohio at the USTA National Campus at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Saturday, March 16, to host Roger Williams College at 1 p.m. Saint Johns (2-4, 0-0 MIAC) will face St. Francis College tomorrow at 7 p.m.
