Second-year head coach led Stonehill to second consecutive NE-10 regular season title in 2014-15
EASTON, Mass. (February 24, 2015) – Stonehill College head ice hockey coach David Borges has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year, the league office announced last Friday.
Borges led Stonehill to a share of its second consecutive NE-10 regular season title this season, as the Skyhawks went 14-6-4 overall and 8-0-2 in conference play. Stonehill, which was picked to finish third in the NE-10 Preseason Coaches Poll, tied Saint Michael's College atop the conference standings in the regular season and earned the second seed in the NE-10 Tournament before falling to third-seeded Saint Anselm College on Saturday at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Six of Borges' student-athletes earned All-Conference accolades at the conclusion of the season, highlighted by senior goaltender Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy), who was named the NE-10 Goaltender of the Year for the second consecutive winter. Tasiopoulos also earned All-NE-10 first team honors, as did senior defenseman Brendan Greene (Weymouth, Massachusetts/Boston Advantage) and junior forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, New York/Boston Bulldogs). Junior defenseman Travis Army (Englewood, Colorado/Worcester Academy) garnered All-NE-10 second team recognition, while freshmen Brendan White (North Reading, Massachusetts/Kimball Union Academy) and Tommy Newton (Hollis, New Hampshire/Portland Jr. Pirates) landed on the All-Rookie Team. White was also selected as the Conference's Rookie of the Year.
Stonehill was at or near the top of the NE-10 in nearly every statistical category, leading the conference in scoring offense (95 goals, 3.96/game) and scoring defense (63 goals, 2.62/game), while ranking second in both penalty kill (84.5 %) and power play (23.1%) efficiency.
After opening its season with a pair of losses, the Skyhawks went 5-0-2 over their next seven games to carry a 5-2-2 mark into the winter break. Stonehill then posted a 5-3-1 record during its January slate, before finishing the regular season strong with four wins and one tie over five contests in February.
Since taking over for Pat Leahy four days prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign, Borges has guided Stonehill through two of its most successful seasons in program history. The Skyhawks have gone 30-16-4 overall (.640), while posting a remarkable 19-0-2 (.929) record in NE-10 play. Last season, Borges led Stonehill to its first regular season conference championship in program history with an 11-0 mark in league play. The Skyhawks finished with a 16-10 record overall, matching the single-season record for wins set in 1976-77, and posting a program-best ten game winning streak in the process.
Borges becomes Stonehill's third NE-10 Coach of the Year in the last four months, as Jim Reddish and Karen Boen were recognized for their success in the fall with the men's soccer and women's cross country teams, respectively.
