Skyhawks win tenth straight against Greyhounds and improve to 16-0-1 in last 17 NE-10 regular season contests
FOXBORO, Mass. (February 4, 2015) – Junior forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, New York/Boston Bulldogs) recorded a career-high six points on one goal and five assists as Stonehill College cruised to a 9-1 victory over Assumption College this evening in Northeast-10 Conference men's ice hockey action at the Foxboro Sports Center.
With tonight's triumph, Stonehill clinches the season series with Assumption and two points in the NE-10 standings. The Skyhawks have now won ten consecutive games against the Greyhounds dating back to February 18th, 2012, and are 16-0-1 in their last 17 regular season conference contests.
Dorgan was one of seven Skyhawks to post a multi-point effort this evening, upping his team-leading total to 24 (3rd in NE-10) in the process. Classmate Richard Harris (Grand Island, New York/Valley Jr. Warriors) registered four assists, while senior Kevin Aufiero (Canton, Massachusetts/Walpole Express) and junior Garrett White (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Boston Bulldogs) totaled three points each on one goal and two helpers.
Juniors Anthony D'Elia (Stamford, Connecticut/Gunnery School) and Dan Graham (Billerica, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton) contributed to the offensive outburst with two goals apiece, while classmate Thomas DePoalo (Mendham, New Jersey/Morristown Beard School) added a goal and an assist.
Senior Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) started the contest in net for the Skyhawks and made 15 saves on 16 shots over the first two periods, before giving way to junior Patrick Farrington (Sandwich, Massachusetts/Bridgton Academy), who stopped all 11 of the shots that he saw in the third.
Sophomore forward Paul Amarone (Hamden, Connecticut/Trinity-Pauling) scored Assumption's lone goal midway through the second period, while junior Alex Erban (Attleboro, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) and freshman Matt Cowles (Farmington, Connecticut/Avon Old Farms) provided assists.
Stonehill opened the scoring 5:35 into the contest, as Dorgan and Harris set up Graham for his third goal of the season to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead. Following an Assumption five-minute boarding major, Dorgan scored on a wrist shot from the left circle at the 11:15 mark to double Stonehill's advantage. The Greyhounds trailed 2-0 after the first period and were outshot by a 17-7 margin.
D'Elia found the back of the net just over three minutes into the second period, and Aufiero followed by stuffing home a rebound at the 4:16 mark, spelling the end of Assumption junior netminder Chris Hemhauser's (Old Saybrook, Connecticut/Glastonbury) outing. Stonehill continued to create opportunities, as DePoalo scored 31 seconds later with the help of White and Aufiero to give the Skyhawks a commanding 5-0 advantage.
The Greyhounds finally broke through on the power play 10:48 into the second period, when Amarone redirected Cowles' shot from the point past Tasiopoulos and into the net. Graham and junior defenseman Travis Army (Englewood, Colorado/Worcester Academy) would each score before the end of the period, however, as Stonehill carried a 7-1 lead into the second intermission.
D'Elia netted his second of the contest at the 13:26 mark of the third period, and White scored in the final minute to cap Stonehill's highest scoring performance since November 30th, 2013, when the Skyhawks defeated Franklin Pierce University, 10-3.
Following tonight's contest, Stonehill (11-5-3, 5-0-1 NE-10) will have an opportunity to earn two more points in the conference standings on Saturday afternoon, as the Skyhawks are set to host Southern New Hampshire University at 4:10 p.m. in Foxboro. Assumption (7-14-0, 3-6-0 NE-10) will return home on Saturday to host Daniel Webster College for an exhibition game.
