EASTON, Mass. (February 4, 2015) – Stonehill College freshman forward Tommy Newton (Hollis, New Hampshire/Portland Jr. Pirates) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference's Rookie of the Week for the first time in his career, the league office announced yesterday.

Newton totaled four points on a goal and three assists as Stonehill went 1-1 last week, dropping a 6-3 contest at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Thursday night before rebounding to post a 6-2 victory over Framingham State University on Saturday afternoon at the Foxboro Sports Center.

Newton opened his week by assisting on junior Tom Jenkins' (Canton, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton) goal 2:26 into the first period to even the score at UMass Dartmouth. Stonehill would take a 3-1 lead 4:20 into the contest before the Corsairs stormed back to win with five unanswered goals.

The freshman followed that up with the strongest performance thus far in his career, a three-point effort in Stonehill's 6-2 win over Framingham State on Saturday. He assisted on two more Jenkins goals, at 16:49 of the first period and 19:50 of the third, while also scoring an empty-netter with 34 seconds remaining in the contest.

Through the first 18 games of this season, Newton has appeared in 13 contests, recording six points on one goal and five assists. The freshman tallied his first collegiate point, an assist, in Stonehill's 3-2 win at Assumption College on November 14th, before adding another helper in the Skyhawks' 6-5 loss at SUNY Canton on January 17th.

A 2014 graduate of Lawrence Academy in Groton, Massachusetts, Newton earned All-Independent School League (ISL) honors as a senior for the Spartans. He also played for the Neponset Valley River Rats and the Portland Junior Pirates of the United States Premier Hockey League (Premier Division).

Stonehill (10-5-3, 4-0-1 NE-10) will be back in action this evening against Assumption (7-13-0, 3-5-0 NE-10) at the Foxboro Sports Center with the opening faceoff set for 7 p.m. The Skyhawks have an opportunity to clinch the season series with a win tonight or in the teams' final meeting on February 14th in Worcester.
