Stonehill Pulls Away Late In 6-2 Win Over Framingham State

Junior Robbie Dorgan scored one of Stonehill's four third period goals, as the Skyhawks posted a 6-2 victory over Framingham State this afternoon.

Junior Thomas Jenkins leads Skyhawks with three points on two goals and an assist

FOXBORO, Mass. (January 31, 2015) – Junior Thomas Jenkins (Canton, Massachusetts/Williston Northampton) and freshman Tommy Newton (Hollis, New Hampshire/Portland Jr. Pirates) recorded three points each to lead the Stonehill College ice hockey team to a 6-2 victory over Framingham State University this afternoon in non-conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center.

Jenkins scored a pair of goals and added an assist, while Newton dished out two assists to go with his first collegiate tally. Senior Stephen Balsamo (Atkinson, New Hampshire/Brewster Academy) also posted a multi-point effort with a pair of helpers, while juniors Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, New York/Boston Bulldogs), Richard Harris (Grand Island, New York/Valley Jr. Warriors), and Garrett White (Wakefield, Massachusetts/Boston Bulldogs) chipped in with a goal each.

Senior netminder Chris Tasiopoulos (Norwell, Massachusetts/Thayer Academy) improved to 9-3-2 on the season with a 27-save effort, stopping 12 shots in each of the first two periods and five in the third.

Junior Sean Parker (Hudson, Massachusetts/Hudson) and freshman Peter Mingus (Gillette, Wyoming/Seattle Totems) each scored for Framingham State, while sophomore goaltender Alessio Muggli (Rueti, Switzerland/EHC Duernten) made 29 saves for the Rams.

Mingus opened the scoring just over nine minutes into the contest when he picked off a Stonehill pass in the Skyhawks defensive zone and beat Tasiopoulos with a wrist shot. Stonehill would respond 52 seconds later, however, as White collected a rebound in front of the net following a shot by junior Thomas DePoalo (Mendham, New Jersey/Morristown Beard School) and stuffed it past Muggli.

The Skyhawks then took a 2-1 lead late in the first when Jenkins flung the puck toward the goal, and it deflected off a Framingham State defenseman and into the net.

The Rams would equalize at the 14:56 mark of the second period, as senior Brendan McCarron (Millbury, Massachusetts/St. John's) and junior Rich Hill (Tampa, Florida/Sioux Eagles) connected with Parker for his first goal of the season. The game would remain tied heading into the second intermission, but Framingham State was whistled for a charging penalty at the buzzer, giving Stonehill a power play to start the third period.

The Skyhawks capitalized on their opportunity with a man advantage, as junior Anthony D'Elia (Stamford, Connecticut/Gunnery School) sent a pass from behind the net to Harris, who knocked home a one-timer 30 seconds into the third period to give Stonehill a 3-2 lead.

With the Skyhawks still clinging to their one-goal edge in the final minute, junior defenseman Travis Army (Englewood, Colorado/Worcester Academy) found Dorgan for an insurance goal at the 19:08 mark, and Newton potted an empty-netter, his first career goal, 18 seconds later. Jenkins added his second goal of the game with ten seconds left in the contest to cap Stonehill's four-goal period.

Following this afternoon's contest, both Stonehill (10-5-3, 4-0-1 NE-10) and Framingham State (3-12-2, 2-8-1 MASCAC) are set to return to conference play for the remainder of the season. The Skyhawks will be back at the Foxboro Sports Center on Wednesday night to host Assumption College, while the Rams hit the road on Tuesday night for a contest at Fitchburg State.
