Seven Stonehill Fall Student-Athletes Earn NE-10 All-Academic Honors


Senior All-American Stephanie Kott headlines seven NE-10 Academic All-Conference selections from the fall season.

Skyhawks honored for their efforts on and off the field of play

EASTON, Mass. (February 5, 2010) - Seven Stonehill College fall student-athletes have earned Academic All-Conference honors in their respective sports as announced by the Northeast-10 Conference office today. The seven Skyhawks, all first time selections, were among 86 NE-10 student-athletes recognized from the sports of men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, field hockey, football and volleyball.

Representing Stonehill on the NE-10 All-Academic teams are men's cross country sophomore Stephen Polito (Worcester, Mass./Doherty Memorial), women's cross country junior Kelly O'Toole (Nashua, N.H./Nashua South), men's soccer junior Tyler Hebert (Rockland, Mass./Sacred Heart) and sophomore Christopher Agan (Niskayuna, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy), women's soccer junior Kirstie St. Martin (Providence, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and sophomore Kelsey Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) and field hockey senior Stephanie Kott (Rutland, Mass./Notre Dame Academy).


Kott

 

Kott, a two-time ZAG/NFHCA Division II National Academic Squad honoree, earns NE-10 All-Academic honors for the first time after leading Stonehill's field hockey team to a 17-5 record overall and 9-1 in the NE-10 to win the regular season championship and earn an NCAA Tournament bid. The health science and Spanish major has earned a 3.36 cumulative grade point average at the College.

Kott was a consensus All-America selection this past fall, earning Longstreth/NFHCA second team honors as well as first team and Defensive MVP accolades from womensfieldhockey.com. Kott earned NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year and first team All-Conference honors after leading a defensive unit which led the Conference with a 1.13 team goals against average (3rd nationally) and six shutouts (5th). Kott also led the Skyhawks with nine assists (3rd NE-10). 


O'Toole

 

O'Toole is also a first time NE-10 All-Academic selection after helping Stonehill's women's cross country team capture the NE-10 and NCAA East Regional championships. The English major has earned a 3.69 cumulative grade point average at the College and is an NE-10 Commissioner's honor roll and Athletic Department honor roll member.

O'Toole competed in six of Stonehill's eight events this past fall, including all four championship meets. The co-captain placed tenth at the Trinity Invitational (17:17, 4K) and 26th at the East Regional (24:17.7, 6K) to highlight her season. She is a two-time All-Northeast-10 performer, earning first team honors as a freshman when she placed sixth and collected first team All-Region accolades as a sophomore after a fifth-place finish at the regional.


Polito

 

Polito collects NE-10 All-Academic honors for the first time after helping Stonehill's men's cross country to the NE-10 championship as well as team titles at the USI Pre-National Invitational and Trinity Invitational, while placing second at the NCAA East Regional. The graphic design major has earned a 3.58 cumulative grade point average at the College and is an NE-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll and Athletic Department honor roll member.

Polito competed in seven of Stonehill's eight events this past fall, including all four championship meets. He earned second team All-Northeast-10 honors with an eighth-place finish at the NE-10 Championships (25:44.4, 8K), and was the Skyhawks top runner at the NCAA Championships with a 62nd-place finish (33:00.5, 10K). Polito also placed fourth at the Bryant Invitational (16:48.46, 5K) and tenth at the USI Pre-National Invite (25:27, 8K). He also collected All-NE-10 and All-Region honors as a freshman. 


St. Martin

 

St. Martin is a first time NE-10 All-Academic selection, having earned a 3.64 cumulative grade point average while majoring in psychology at Stonehill. She is an NE-10 Commissioner's honor roll and Athletic Department honor roll member as well.

St. Martin started all 19 matches for the Skyhawks this fall and led the team and ranked third in the NE-10 with 14 goals and fourth in points with a team-best 33 while adding five assists. She chipped in three match-winning goals, one first goal and a match-tying goal with a hat trick. St. Martin earned NSCAA/adidas All-East region second team honors and was also selected to the All-NE-10 first team while collecting NEWISA All-Star honors.


Mahoney

 

Mahoney also collects NE-10 All-Academic honors for the first time, having earned a 3.53 cumulative grade point average while majoring in biology at the College. She is also an NE-10 Commissioner's honor roll and Athletic Department honor roll member.

Mahoney started all 19 matches for Stonehill this past fall, earning a spot on the All-Northeast-10 third team. She led the NE-10 with ten assists to go with five goals for 20 points (9th NE-10), adding two match-winners and two first goals. Mahoney closed out the season with points in seven of the Skyhawks final eight matches, including a six-match point streak at one point.

Stonehill, ranked tenth in the final regular season National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/adidas Division II East regional rankings, finished its season with a 10-8-1 record overall, 8-6-1 in the Northeast-10 to finish sixth in the Conference standings. 


Hebert

 

Hebert is a first time NE-10 All-Academic selection, having earned a 3.95 cumulative grade point average while majoring in finance at Stonehill. He earned the Fred C. Petti Male Scholar-Athlete award for having the highest GPA among all Stonehill student-athletes for the 2008-09 academic year and is an NE-10 Commissioner's honor roll and Athletic Department honor roll member.

Hebert appeared in 12 matches this fall for Stonehill after overcoming an early season injury. He dished one assist for a point. Hebert has started 20 of 46 matches played over his three seasons for the Skyhawks, collecting three goals and three assists for nine career points.

Agan also collects NE-10 All-Academic honors for the first time, having earned a 3.48 cumulative grade point average while majoring in accounting, with a minor in business administration. He is also an NE-10 Commissioner's honor roll and Athletic Department honor roll member.


Agan

 

Agan earned third team All-NE-10 honors this past fall in leading a Stonehill defense which shaved a half goal per match off its team goals against average from the year before as one of the more improved teams in the Conference. He started all 17 matches and netted a goal for two points, while leading a defense which posted a 1.64 team GAA with three shutouts.

Stonehill, which opened the season 4-0-0 for the first time in 21 years, finished the fall with a 7-9-1 record overall, including a 3-9-1 clip in Northeast-10 play. The Skyhawks were in the mix for an NE-10 Tournament spot right up until the final week of the regular season.

To be eligible for selection to the academic teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale); and 3) completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution. The Northeast-10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a vote of a selection pool that includes administrators, Senior Woman Administrator council, Sports Information Directors and the Faculty Athletic Representative council.
