Skyhawks win third-straight behind second-straight shutout effort

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 8, 2009) - Stonehill College, ranked fourth in this week's Kookaburra/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II poll, posted its second-straight shutout with a 4-0 victory over Assumption College at Multi-Sport Stadium.

Senior Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville North) led the way for Stonehill with two goals. The four points give Hourihan 80 for her career to move into fourth on the program's all-time list behind classmate Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth), who has 83 career points after her assist tonight.

Sophomore Kathryn Nelson (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) added a goal and assist for the Skyhawks, while junior Lindsay Pinkham (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) dished two assists. Sophomore Caitlin O'Keeffe (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) chipped in with a goal as well.


Junior Courtney Osier posted her second-straight shutout without making a save. The Skyhawks have yielded just one goal over the last 245 minutes.

Junior goalkeeper Courtney Osier (South Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) was untested in goal to post her second-straight shutout (seventh career) as Stonehill out-shot Assumption 16-1 with the Skyhawks holding the Greyhounds without a shot on goal. Osier and the Stonehill defense have allowed just one goal over the last three and a half games (0.29 GAA).

Junior Danielle Luongo (Northboro, Mass./Algonquin) finished with seven saves for Assumption.

After a scoreless first half, Stonehill erupted for four second half tallies. Hourihan opened the scoring 53-seconds into the second half, assisted by Nelson who scored the Skyhawks second marker less than two minutes later on a feed by Ladino. Hourihan extended the Stonehill lead to 3-0 at 48:30, before O'Keeffe rounded out the scoring, assisted by Pinkham, with 7:29 left in regulation.

Stonehill (3-2, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Thursday when it hosts No. 3-ranked University of Massachusetts Lowell in an early non-conference showdown at W.B. Mason Stadium at 7 p.m. The game will be the tip-off to "Kickoff Weekend" at Stonehill. Assumption (1-3, 0-0 NE-10) visits American International College on Thursday at 4 p.m.
