Morris Named Dita/NFHCA North Region Coach of the Year

Second-year head coach earns award for first time after leading Skyhawks to NE-10 regular season championship and NCAA bid

EASTON, Mass. (November 16, 2009) - Stonehill College head coach Shelly Morris has been named the Dita/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II North Region Coach of the Year, the Association announced today. Morris is the first Stonehill field hockey head coach to earn regional coach of the year honors.

Morris, who earns regional coach of the year honors for the second time in her eight-year coaching career, led Stonehill to the Northeast-10 Conference regular season championship this fall with a 9-1 conference record. The Skyhawks finished the season with a 17-5 record overall, earning an NCAA Tournament bid for the third time in program history. Stonehill was ranked first in the North Region every week the NCAA released the regional poll and was ranked third in the final regular season Kookaburra/NFHCA Division II national poll. The Skyhawks earned a first round bye and reached the semifinals of the NCAA Championships for the second time in program history - serving as championship hosts this past weekend.

Morris, who was also voted the NE-10 Coach of the Year this fall by her peers, has posted a 30-13 (.698) record in her two seasons at Stonehill. She has recorded a career record of 97-74 (.567) which includes her six seasons at Ohio University where she earned Dita/NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year honors in 2001 after leading the Bobcats to 16 wins and both the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament titles and first NCAA Tournament berth in program history.

This season, Stonehill led the Northeast-10 with a 1.13 team goals against average and six shutouts, while ranking third with 2.64 goals per game first with 13.82 penalty corners per game. The Skyhawks led Division II in penalty corners, ranked third in goals against average and eighth in scoring. Stonehill posted a 6-4 record against nationally-ranked teams.
