The Game
Stonehill College closes out its 2023 season by hosting Long Island University for a Northeast Conference matchup on Senior Day on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 (COG-lin) Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon. The Skyhawks are looking to finish their second NCAA Division I FCS season strong after handing Duquesne University its first NEC loss of the season with a 33-28 in Pittsburgh last weekend, while the Sharks are winners of three straight after a 49-14 triumph over New York rival Wagner College in Brookville, N.Y., last Saturday.

Media Info
This afternoon's game is being presented live by SkyhawksVision on NEC Front Row with Charlie Bergeron (PBP), finishing his 25th season as the Voice of the Skyhawks, calling the action along with Chris Santos (Analyst), also assistant coach of men's tennis at Stonehill, under the direction of Matt Nelson. The broadcast can be accessed via stonehillskyhawks.com through its NEC Front Row portal (necfrontrow.com/schools/SC) or through Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV and Roku via the NEC On the Run App. Radio coverage is by WSHL-FM 91.3 in the Easton area with Chris Robbins and Andrew Nilsen calling the action, with 88.1 FM WCWP bringing the action to Long Island with Joseph Frescott and Brady Campbell on the call.

Last Time Out
Stonehill handed Duquesne its first Conference loss of the season and delayed clinching the Northeast Conference championship outright for at least a week with a 33-28 triumph at Arthur J. Rooney Field. Junior Chris Domercant (Bellingham, Mass.) racked up a career-high 184 all-purpose yards, scoring the winning touchdown with a 21-yard end around rush with 50-seconds to play to cap off a wild back and forth battle. He finished with 51 yards and the score on six carries, caught four passes for 66 yards and tallied 67 yards on three kickoff returns for the afternoon. Senior linebacker Justin Waters (Reisterstown, Md.) led the Stonehill defensive effort which largely produced an early 17-0 lead just seven minutes into the game with six tackles (two solo), two fumble recoveries that led to scores, including a 17-yard scoop and score of his own with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. Classmate Anthony LaMonica (Dorchester, Mass.) contributed five tackles (four solo) and a key fourth quarter interception. Senior running back Jermaine Corbett (Long Branch, N.J.) led a Stonehill rushing attack that totaled 214 yards on the ground with his fourth 100-yard game of the season (eighth career), carrying the ball 21 times for 108 yards.

Against the Sharks
This afternoon marks the 19th meeting all-time between these two programs - the second at the NCAA I FCS level as members of the Northeast Conference. LIU holds a 15-3 advantage in the series which dates back to 1997 through the Sharks NCAA Division II era as fellow Northeast-10 members under the banner of C.W. Post and then LIU Post. LIU is 8-1 all-time here in Easton, winning its last two visits to W.B. Mason Stadium where the Sharks are 4-1 all-time against Stonehill. LIU has won each of the last four meetings overall, including a 34-28 victory on Long Island last November. Stonehill head coach Eli Gardner is 0-4 over his career against the Sharks, while LIU head coach Ron Cooper is 1-0 against the Skyhawks.

Last Time They Met
LIU built a 27-7 halftime lead and then withstood a big Stonehill comeback in the final 18 minutes of the contest to claim a 34-28 triumph in Northeast Conference action at Bethpage Federal Credit Union Stadium. Luca Stanzani passed for 333 yards and three touchdowns to lead LIU to a third-straight win. The Sharks finished with 454 yards of offense for the afternoon, with Owen Glascoe scoring three touchdowns with a pair on the ground on just two touches, to go with one on two receptions for 39 yards. Stonehill trailed by 20-points (34-14) with under three minutes remaining in the third quarter, but rallied with a chance to escape Long Island with a win. Down by six with a second possession inside the three minute mark of the fourth, freshman Ayinde Johnson collected an interception at the Sharks 24-yard line to seal the win with 41-seconds to play. Tom Comella (Johnston, R.I.) led Stonehill with 134 all-purpose yards, with eight carries for 62 yards and two touchdowns, to go with 72 return yards. Ashur Carraha (Cambridge, Mass.) competed 17-of-42 passes for 180 yards and a touchdown. Masyn Lorick totaled eight tackles (six solo), a forced fumble, pass breakup and 0.5 tackles for a loss of a yard.

Defensive Player of the Week III
Senior linebacker Justin Waters (Reisterstown, Md.) is the third Stonehill player to earn Defensive Player of the Week this season after collecting weekly honors for the first time in his career on Monday. He spearheaded Stonehill's defensive effort and was largely responsible for the Skyhawks building a 17-0 lead before the first quarter was half old in Saturday's 33-28 win at Duquesne to hand the Dukes their lone NEC loss of the season. He shared the team lead with six tackles (two solo) and recovered two fumbles that led to touchdowns, including a 17-yard scoop and score for the first touchdown of his career and a 17-0 lead seven minutes into the game. His first recovery on the Duquesne 13-yard line on the Dukes first offensive play from scrimmage resulted in a 10-0 lead three plays later after the Skyhawks had scored a field on the opening drive of the game. The second fumble recovery that he returned for a score was on the Dukes second play from scrimmage, giving Stonehill three scores before the hosts had attempted three snaps on offense. Waters, who was also named an NEC Prime Performer for his efforts, joined classmates Sam Murphy (Lockport, N.Y.) and Micah Brown (Depew, N.Y.) in collecting NEC Defensive Player of the Week accolades this season.

2x NEC Special Teams Player of the Week
Senior placekicker Perry Shelbred (Ridgefield, Conn.) was named the NEC Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in his career overall on Monday. He converted both field goal attempts, connecting with a 22-yard try at the end of an 11-play, 69-yard drive on the opening possession of the game. Shelbred followed that with a 34-yard field goal with three-seconds left in the first quarter. Shelbred also earned the weekly accolades following Stonehill's 33-30 win at Central Connecticut State University in week two to open the NEC season after delivering a walkoff program-record matching 52-yard field goal.

Prime Performers

While Waters earns the recognition for the first time in his career, Domercant earns the honor for the third time this fall after racking up a career-high 184 all-purpose yards against Duquesne, including a game-winning 21-yard touchdown rush with 50-seconds to play that answered a go-ahead score by the Dukes less than two minutes earlier. He finished the game with four receptions for 66 yards, six carries for 51 yards and his first career rushing score, while returning three kickoffs for 67 yards, while having a 96-yard kickoff return for a score nullified by a penalty.
