Last Time Out
Merrimack College grabbed ten first quarter points and made it stand the rest of the way, despite a fourth quarter in which the teams combined for 42 points, in securing a 45-34 victory over Stonehill in a  Northeast Conference matchup at Duane Stadium. Donovan Wadley scored three touchdowns and Tyvon Edmonds, Jr. rushed for 169 yards and two more scores on 25 carries on the ground to lead Merrimack to its second-straight NEC win. Wadley finished with 169 all-purpose yards as he totaled 61 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries on the ground to go with three receptions for 56 yards and 52 kick return yards. Junior quarterback Ashur Carraha (Cambridge, Mass.) threw a season-high three touchdown passes to three different receivers, completing 20-of-35 passes for 204 yards without an interception, finishing the game with 224 total yards. He was 11-of-16 for 157 yards and two scores in the fourth quarter alone, leading the Skyhawks to 28 points in the frame to draw within two scores on two occasions before Merrimack was able to close out the win. Sophomore Zavion Woodard (Cockeysville, Md.) notched the first 100-yard game of his collegiate career in his first career start, rushing the ball a career-best 20 times for 103 yards and two touchdowns for the first multi-touchdown game of his career. Senior linebacker Sam Murphy (Lockport, N.Y.) posted double-digit tackles for the second-straight game to lead the Stonehill defense, matching his season-high with a game-best ten (five solo), including 0.5 for a loss of a yard, and his first career interception. Junior linebacker Marc Christian Georges (Stoughton, Mass.) added three stops (two solo) and notched his first career touchdown with a catch on the offensive side of the ball that kick-started the Skyhawks 28-point fourth.

Against the Pioneers
This afternoon marks the eighth meeting all-time between these two programs. Stonehill holds a 5-2 lead in the all-time series that dates back to 1991 after Sacred Heart posted a 40-27 victory in the first meeting between the two programs in Northeast Conference play and in 26 years. Stonehill is 2-1 all-time against Sacred Heart at home as the Pioneers make their first visit to W.B. Mason Stadium with their last trip to Easton coming in 1995 with Stonehill posting a 19-7 victory at what is now Skyhawk Field. Stonehill head coach Eli Gardner is 0-1 in his career against the Pioneers, while Sacred Heart head coach Mark Nofri is 1-0 all-time against the Skyhawks.

Last Time They Met
Sacred Heart and Stonehill combined for nearly 1,000-yards of total offense as the reigning Northeast Conference champions outscored the Skyhawks 40-27 in an NEC football matchup at Campus Field for the first meeting between the two programs in 26 years. Marquez McCray passed for 405 yards as he completed 21-of-30 passes with a touchdown, while adding another on the ground as he rushed the ball seven times for 29 yards to finish the afternoon with 434 of Sacred Heart's 594 yards of total offense in the contest. Malik Grant added 104 yards on 25 carries with a touchdown as four different Pioneers found the end zone on the ground. Tom Comella (Johnston, R.I.) reached the end zone twice for the first time in his collegiate career, finishing with a career-high 164 all-purpose yards, while Ashur Carraha (Cambridge, Mass.) completed 18-of-28 passes (64.3%) for 221 yards and three touchdowns for the afternoon without an interception for a 165.9 pass efficiency rating.

Backs Battle

This afternoon's game is set to feature the top two returning running backs from the 2022 season in All-NEC picks Jermaine Corbett (Long Branch, N.J.) and Sacred Heart's Malik Grant. The duo combined for nearly 1,900 yards and 21 touchdowns a year ago, with Corbett finishing second among NEC leaders with 110.6 yards per game and nine touchdowns and Grant finishing third with 98.2 yards per game and 12 scores. So far this season, Corbett is second again in the NEC with 111.8 yards per game and five touchdowns, while Grant is fourth with 75.1 yards and a touchdown.

NEC Defensive Player of the Week
Stonehill senior linebacker Sam Murphy (Lockport, N.Y.) was named the Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week following the Skyhawks matchup with Merrimack two weeks ago. Murphy delivered double-digit tackles for the second-straight week (third career) at Merrimack, matching his season-high with ten tackles (five solo), including 0.5 tackles for a loss of one yard, to go with the first interception of his career late in the first half. The interception was on the Stonehill 19-yard line and ended a Merrimack scoring chance with less than a minute to play in the second quarter and kept the Skyhawks within 11 at the break. Murphy is the second Stonehill senior to earn NEC Defensive Player of the Week, joining fellow Saint Joseph's Collegiate Institute product Micah Brown (Depew, N.Y.) who earned the recognition after week two after a season-high seven tackles in the win over Central Connecticut State, including two key forced fumbles as the Skyhawks forced three overall in the contest.

Dudes
Junior quarterback Ashur Carraha (Cambridge, Mass.) and sophomore running back Zavion Woodard (Cockeysville, Md.) were both selected as "Dudes of the Week" by the New England Football Journal for their offensive efforts at Merrimack two weeks ago. Carraha tossed a season-high three touchdowns to three different receivers at Merrimack on Saturday, completing 20-of-34 passes for a season-best 204 yards without an interception. He helped pilot a late Stonehill comeback effort that produced four scores in the final quarter by completing 11-of-16 pass attempts for 157 yards and two touchdown passes in the frame. Woodard posted the first 100-yard rushing game of his collegiate career in his first career start on Saturday, carrying the ball a career-best 20 times for 103 yards and two fourth quarter touchdowns for his first multi-score game at Stonehill. The duo join senior running back Jermaine Corbett (Long Branch, N.J.), who was named to the "Dude of the Week" list in back-to-back weeks earlier this season, in receiving the recognition.

Prime Performers
Senior linebacker Sam Murphy (Lockport, N.Y.) earned Prime Performer status from the Northeast Conference for a team-leading third time this season following Stonehill's matchup with Merrimack. Murphy, who also earned NEC Defensive Player of the Week honors, was joined last week with Prime Performer honors by junior quarterback Ashur Carraha (Cambridge, Mass.) and sophomore running back Zavion Woodard (Cockeysville, Md.) who earned the honors for the first time this season. Seven Stonehill players have earned a total of ten NEC Prime Performer recognitions this season, with senior running back Jermaine Corbett (Long Branch, N.J.) earning the recognition twice, while classmates Perry Shelbred (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Micah Brown (Depew, N.Y.), along with junior Chris Domercant (Bellingham, Mass.) have all been selected once.

Plus-Minus
Stonehill ranks second in the NEC for turnover margin at +3, having forced eight turnovers, while committing five themselves in six games. The Skyhawks saw their streak of three-straight games without a turnover halted with a first quarter interception against Saint Francis two weeks ago, finishing the game with a season-high three overall. The Skyhawks played mistake free for 14-straight quarters dating back to the middle of the second against New Hampshire in week one. Stonehill's setback at Merrimack was Stonehill's third in 15 games under head coach Eli Gardner in which the Skyhawks didn't turn the ball over, with two of those three games (at Fordham) coming this season.

Double-Digit Stops
Stonehill senior linebacker Sam Murphy (Lockport, N.Y.) has posted a season-high ten tackles in back-to-back weeks against Saint Francis and Merrimack. Celebrating 75 Years
Stonehill College, founded in 1948 is celebrating its 75th Anniversary during the 2023-24 academic year. In September 1948, some 134 students — many of whom were veterans from World War II — gathered with the eight teachers who would serve as their faculty to celebrate Mass at the Chapel in Donahue Hall. That small gathering of students and teachers marked the beginning of Stonehill College. The College kicked off its 75th Anniversary Celebration last weekend with a Jubilee Mass, followed by music, games food trucks and beer garden.

AYE, AYE CAPTAINS
Stonehill head coach eli gardner and his coaching staff have named four captains for the 2023 season. Fifth-year offensive lineman Thomas Walsh (Waldwick, N.J.) has been named a captain for the second-straight year and is joined by postgrad lineman David Satkowski (Southbury, Conn.), senior wide receiver Cameron Alves (Cranston, R.I.) and senior linebacker Sam Murphy (Lockport, N.Y.) as captain following a vote of their teammates during spring ball.

MOVIN' ON UP!
Stonehill College announced in early April, 2022, that it had accepted an invitation to join the NCAA Division I Northeast Conference (NEC), beginning a four-year Division I transition period to conclude in 2026. The Skyhawks entire set of 23 varsity programs will now compete in the NEC, with the exception of equestrian, women's ice hockey (NEWHA) and men's ice hockey (independant) starting last fall.
