No. 20 Southern N.H. Takes Two From Baseball

EASTON, Massachusetts (March 27, 2021) – The Stonehill College baseball team dropped two Northeast-10 Conference contests to No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University Saturday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field with scores of 8-0 and 7-4.

Game 1: Stonehill 0, Southern N.H. 8

The Penmen scored in every inning of the seven-inning game except for the sixth, as Southern N.H.'s Wesley Tobin threw a complete game, allowing no runs and only two hits. The Skyhawks saw its first baserunner of the game in the bottom of the third, just before Southern N.H. saw its first multi-run inning of the game.

In the top of the fourth, with runners on first and third, the Penmen drew the throw down to second scoring Michael LaRocca from third, 4-0. After a walk, Christian Mercedes singled to left field for one more run, extending the lead to five, 5-0. Southern N.H. saw its second two-run inning in the top of the fifth, off of two RBI singles from LaRocca and Idelson Taveras, for a seven-run advantage, 7-0.


Maher went 1-for-2, 2 RBI, 3 walks, double

Dakota Mulcay launched a solo shot over the right field fence as the lead-off batter in the top of the seventh inning to put up one more run for the Penmen, 8-0.

The Penmen once again put up and early lead as they saw two RBI singles from Marcus Chavez in the top of the first and third innings for a 2-0 advantage. The Skyhawks cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth inning after retiring the side in the earlier part of the inning. With the bases loaded, Farragher lifted the ball out to left field, scoring Rob Duarte from third base, 2-1. Maher walked to load the bases again, but Nick Artymowicz retired the side with his ninth strikeout of the game.

Southern N.H. put up five runs in the top of the fifth on three hits and an error to give the Penmen a six-run lead, 7-1. Michael White and Billy Duff combined for 4.1 innings pitched allowing no runs and only three hits to keep the Penmen scoreless for four innings. In the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded, Kiely tallied the Skyhawks' third hit of the game scoring Farragher from third, 7-2.

Stonehill threatened in the bottom of the eighth, with a two-run double from Maher down the right field line, cutting the deficit to three, 7-4. The Skyhawks stranded Maher on base, as the Penmen retired the side. With a walk and a hit by pitch, Stonehill stranded its two final batters on base, as Southern N.H. took its fourth-straight win, 7-4.

Stonehill travels up to Colchester, Vermont to begin its four-game series against Saint Michael's College on Thursday, March 1, with a first game scheduled for 1:00 p.m., followed by the second at 4:00 p.m.
