Baseball Drops Two Against No. 20 Southern New Hampshire

Lucier went 2-for-4 on the day with one run scored, two walks, one stolen base

EASTON, Massachusetts (March 25, 2021) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell to No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University in the teams' first Northeast-10 Conference matchup Thursday afternoon at Lou Gorman Field with scores of 10-2 and 3-1.

The Penmen got on board early after the Skyhawks got two quick outs, as Dakota Mulcay lifted the ball high and long over the right field fence for a two-run homerun, 2-0. Southern N.H. put up another run in the top of the third with a stand-up double to center field from Sam Henrie scoring Mulcay from second, 3-0.

Stonehill gave up three runs in the top of the fourth on two wild pitches and a double down the left field line from Mulcay to extend Southern N.H.'s lead to six, 6-0. The Skyhawk's Herrick lined out to center field, scoring John Orzechowski from third for a sacrifice fly, cutting the deficit to five, 6-1.


Duarte went 2-for-5 on the day with 2 walks

The Penmen continued scoring as they put up two more in the top of the sixth on a two-run homerun from Danniel Rivera and then one more in the top of the seventh on a fielding error to make it 9-1. The Skyhawks's Maher dropped the ball into right field in the bottom of the seventh, bringing home Lucier from second for Stonehill's second run of the game, 9-2.

In the top of the ninth, the Penmen's Bryce Reagan reached on an error and made it to second on the play with one out. After a second out, Joshua Goldstein singled to left field, bringing home Reagan for the final run of the game, 10-2.

Key Moments:

The Penmen once again jumped on the board and scored two runs in the top of the first inning. Southern N.H. saw Rivera walk to lead off the game, as Mercedes followed with a double down the left field line putting runners in scoring position. With one out, Rivera scored on a wild pitch and Mulcay sent a fly ball out to center field for an RBI sacrifice fly for a 2-0 advantage.

Southern N.H. threatened in the top of the second inning loading the bases as Matt Smith retired the inning with two groundouts and a strikeout. For back-to-back innings, Stonehill stranded two runners on.

With two outs in the top of the fifth, Southern N.H.'s Mulcay ripped his second homerun of the day to left field to add another run to the scoreboard with two outs, 3-0.

Herrick led off the bottom of the seventh with a stand-up double over the left fielder's head. Lucier found a hole in left center to put runners on the corners. Mike Maher grounded out to the shortstop for the second out but was able to bring Lucier in to cut the deficit to two, 3-1. The Penmen got out of the inning with a final ground out to secure the sweep.

Stonehill hosts No. 20 Southern N.H. for two more games on Saturday, March 27 on Lou Gorman Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at noon for a seven-inning game, followed by a nine-inning game to wrap up the four-game series.
