No. 5 Franklin Pierce Edges Stonehill 6-5 In 11 Innings

RINDGE, N.H. (April 2, 2015) – The Stonehill College baseball team rallied from a two-run ninth inning deficit, but Franklin Pierce University, ranked No. 5 in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Poll, escaped with a 6-5 victory in 11 innings today in Northeast-10 Conference action at Pappas Field.

With the Skyhawks trailing 5-3 in the top of the ninth, junior outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) hit a towering, two-run home run to right field to send the game to extra innings.

After a scoreless tenth, Franklin Pierce walked off with the win in the bottom of the 11th on sophomore Kyle Hood's (Arlington, Massachusetts/Arlington) RBI single.

Senior righthander Armand Rugel (Middletown, Rhode Island/Middletown) got the start for Stonehill but did not earn a decision after giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks through 6.1 innings. Freshman Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) took the loss despite giving up just one run on one hit through four frames.

Senior second baseman Christian Baglini (Milford, Connecticut/Notre Dame High) led the Skyhawks at the plate, going 3-for-6 with a run and two RBI. Sophomore outfielder Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) went 2-for-4 with a walk and one RBI, while Campbell and junior Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) added two hits each.


Senior Christian Baglini went 3-for-6 with two RBI in Stonehill's 6-5, 11-inning loss at Franklin Pierce. 

Senior catcher Matt Walsh (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) paced the Franklin Pierce offense, as he went 2-for-5 with a solo home run. Classmate John Razzino (Cranston, Rhode Island/CC of Rhode Island) walked and hit a two-run homer, while junior Kurtis White (Nahant, Massachusetts/UMass Boston) singled and scored a run.

Sophomore Mike Lundin (Kingston, Massachusetts/Silver Lake Regional) went the first 5.2 innings for the Ravens, striking out eight and giving up three runs on ten hits. Senior Travis Landry (Loudon, New Hampshire/Merrimack Valley) improved to 3-0 with the win after tossing 1.1 scoreless frames of relief.

Franklin Pierce took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout by Razzino, before tacking on another run in the fourth on Walsh's solo shot. The Ravens then doubled their lead the next inning, as Razzino belted a two-run home run down the left field line.

Stonehill finally broke through in the top of the sixth, plating three runs on three hits and an error. Monte got it started with an RBI single through the right side, and two batters later, Baglini doubled to left center, scoring Hoyt and sophomore Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham).

Franklin Pierce got one run back in the seventh to go up 5-3, and held onto its two-run advantage until the ninth inning. Baglini singled with one out in the ninth and advanced to second on a wild pitch, setting up Campbell's game-tying two-run homer.

Stonehill (15-5-1, 3-1 NE-10) and Franklin Pierce (24-2, 6-1 NE-10) will cap their three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday at Pappas Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
