Sophomore Steve Lee went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs today as Stonehill picked up a pair of wins against Saint Anselm.

Starters Jeremy Roberts and Michael Young combine for 15 strikeouts, one run in 14.2 innings

EASTON, Mass. (April 18, 2015) – Stonehill College utilized strong starting pitching performances from sophomore Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Massachusetts/Malden Catholic) and freshman Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) and a 21-hit attack at the plate to earn a pair of victories against Saint Anselm College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Lou Gorman Field. Stonehill cruised to a 12-1 win in the opener, before posting a 2-0 shutout victory in game two.

Roberts earned the win in game one, improving to 2-3 this season after lasting seven innings and giving up just one run on five hits to go with seven strikeouts and two walks. Making his first collegiate start in game two, Young tossed 7.2 shutout frames, striking out eight and allowing just three hits to pick up the victory.

Senior second baseman Christian Baglini (Milford, Connecticut/Notre Dame High) stayed hot at the plate, going 4-for-7 with a double and three runs, extending his hitting streak to eight games in the process. Sophomore third baseman Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) went 3-for-5 with a double, one RBI and two runs, while junior outfielder Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) recorded four hits and scored three runs. Juniors Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) and Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) led the way for the Skyhawks in game one, as Campbell belted a grand slam and Hocking added a three-run homer.

Senior Mike Hayden (Cranston, Rhode Island/Cranston West) went 2-for-8 with a double and a run to pace Saint Anselm, while classmate Joe Morin (Salem, New Hampshire/Salem) and freshman John Marculitis (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/Worcester Academy) added two hits each for the Hawks.

Junior Tom Hudon (Merrimack, New Hampshire/Merrimack) turned in an impressive outing on the mound in game two, holding the Skyhawks to two unearned runs through eight innings, but took the loss to fall to 3-5 this season.

The Skyhawks posted their fourth consecutive game with at least ten runs and 14 hits in the opener, cruising to a win with four runs in the third and seven more in the fifth. Saint Anselm took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Hayden doubled before coming in to score on an RBI single by Morin, but that would be the only run the Hawks would score in either game.

Stonehill tied the contest in the third on an RBI groundout by Campbell, and went ahead for good two batters later, as Hocking hit a towering, three-run homer over the left field fence.

The Skyhawks took a 5-1 lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Hoyt, before breaking the game open with seven runs in the fifth. Lee and senior catcher Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/Saint Bonaventure) each recorded RBI singles in the inning, and sophomore first baseman Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) scored on a passed ball. Campbell capped the seven-run frame with a two-out, opposite field grand slam, his second home run of the season.

Freshman Michael Young earned the win in game two after tossing 7.2 shutout innings with eight strikeouts and one walk.

Freshman Pat Shore (Norwood, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) took over for Roberts in the seventh and gave up just one hit the rest of the way as Stonehill won its fifth straight game.

Stonehill 2, Saint Anselm 0

Game two proved to be a pitchers' duel between Young and Hudon, as the two combined to give up just ten hits and no earned runs. Senior shortstop Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) gave Stonehill a 1-0 lead in the first with an RBI single up the middle, and the Skyhawks doubled their lead in the second on an RBI groundout by freshman Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet).

Young was dominant early and in control throughout for the Skyhawks, facing the minimum of 12 batters through the first four innings before giving up a single in the fifth and then retiring the Hawks in order in the sixth and seventh.

The freshman got two outs in the eighth, but also allowed a single and issued his first walk, which ended his outing. Senior Steve Pike (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) struck out the final batter of the eighth, and sophomore Aubrey Solomon (Groton, Massachusetts/Lawrence Academy) worked out of a jam in the ninth to pick up his NE-10-leading sixth save of the season.

Solomon, who entered the game with a runner on first, retired the first batter he faced before allowing a single. Both runners moved into scoring position when Morin grounded out for the second out of the inning, and Solomon struck sophomore Nick Bragole (Newburyport, Massachusetts/Saint John's Prep) out looking to end the game.

Stonehill (22-9-1, 10-5 NE-10), now winners of six straight, will cap its three-game weekend series with Saint Anselm (10-19, 7-9 NE-10) tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Lou Gorman Field.
