EASTON, Mass. (April 22, 2015) – Bentley University scored four runs in the fourth inning and held off Stonehill College for a 6-4 victory this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Lou Gorman Field.
Sophomore left-hander Evan Walsh (Arlington, Massachusetts/Arlington Catholic) earned the win for the Falcons, striking out six and allowing four runs on seven hits in eight innings of work.
Junior outfielders Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) and Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) led the Skyhawks at the plate, recording two hits and one run each. Classmate Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer, while sophomore outfielder Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) added an RBI single. Hoyt and senior catcher Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/Saint Bonaventure) each extended their hitting streaks to eight games as Stonehill had its seven-game winning streak snapped.
Junior lefty Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro, Massachusetts/Middleboro) got the start for the Skyhawks and took his first loss of the season after giving up five runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings. Senior Armand Rugel (Middletown, Rhode Island/Middletown) came on in the fourth and tossed 5.1 frames of relief, striking out five batters and allowing one unearned run on five hits.
Senior outfielder Tom Nagy (Fairfield, Connecticut/Ludlowe) led the way for Bentley, going 4-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, a home run and three RBI. Classmate Mike Muir (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) went 2-for-5 with an RBI single and a run, while freshman Mike Samko (Arlington, Massachusetts/Buckingham, Browne, & Nichols) and sophomore Justin Ashworth (Orange, Connecticut/Amity Regional) drove in one run each.
Junior Brian Campbell went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run today. |
Nagy staked the Falcons to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with an RBI double, but Stonehill answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Hoyt led off with a double, and two batter later Campbell drew a walk before Hocking belted a three-run shot over the left center field fence.
Both teams stranded a runner on base in the second and went down in order in the third, before the Falcons posted a four-run fourth to take a 5-3 lead. Muir reached to lead off the inning on an infield single, and Nagy followed with a two-run shot to tie the score. Later in the inning, Samko delivered an RBI triple to right field before coming in to score on a groundout by Ashworth.
Walsh held the Skyhawks to singles in the fifth and sixth, and the sophomore retired the side in order in the seventh. Stonehill had an opportunity to tie the game in the eighth, as a single by Hoyt and a double by Campbell put two runners in scoring position, but a strikeout followed by a fly out ended the inning with Bentley still ahead 5-3.
The Falcons added an insurance run in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Muir, as Stonehill was faced with a three-run deficit in its final at-bat. Schneider led off the bottom of the ninth with a single, ending Walsh's outing as sophomore Jack Burke (Reading, Massachusetts/St. Johns Prep) came on in relief. Schneider advanced to second on a groundout, before scoring two batters later on an RBI single by Monte. With two outs and the potential game-tying run at the plate, Monte was thrown out attempting to steal second base as Burke earned his first save of the season.
Stonehill (23-10-1, 11-6 NE-10) will look to bounce back this weekend with a four-game divisional series at Saint Michael's College. The Skyhawks and Purple Knights are scheduled to play doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday, with both set to begin at noon.
