Ten-Run Fourth Sinks Stonehill In 14-8 Loss At Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 10, 2015) – The Stonehill College baseball team led Rollins College 3-1 after one inning, but the Tars tied the game in the third and posted a ten-run fourth en route to a 14-8 non-conference victory this evening at Alfond Stadium.

Junior Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) led Stonehill at the plate, going 2-for-4 out of the leadoff spot with a double, a walk, one run and two stolen bases. Senior shortstop Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) was one of five Skyhawks to record an RBI, as he went 2-for-5 with a double and two runs, while sophomore first baseman Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) added two hits and drove in one run.

Senior outfielder Christian Coburn (Windermere, Florida/College of Central Florida) paced a Rollins offense that piled up 19 hits with a 4-for-5 effort, including a double and two RBI. Coburn also scored three runs, while redshirt senior Bryan Perlmutter (River Vale, New Jersey/Gloucester County College) added four hits, one run, and one RBI.

Stonehill freshman righthander Pat Shore (Norwood, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) took the loss in his first collegiate start after giving up nine runs in 3.1 innings of work. Freshman Caleb Jakes (Maitland, Florida/Orangewood Christian School) earned the win for the Tars, as he logged four frames and gave up three runs while striking out four batters.

Stonehill got off to a strong start this evening, jumping out to a 3-0 lead with four hits in the top of the first. Hoyt led off with a single, before stealing second base and advancing to third on a fly out. He then came in to score the first run of the contest on an RBI single by junior outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles). Fratus followed with a double to right center, scoring Campbell, and two batters later sophomore third baseman Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) drove in Fratus with a double to left field.

Rollins got one run back in the bottom of the first, as junior Carlos Garmendia (Miami, Florida/South Miami) recorded an RBI single, before tying the game in the third on RBI groundouts by Garmendia and redshirt junior Skip Kovar (Maitland, Florida/FSC Jacksonville).

The Tars then broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with ten runs to go up 13-3. Coburn got it started with a two-run double down the left field line, and later in the inning Garmendia picked up his third RBI of the contest. Freshman Nick Breen (Debary, Florida/Orangewood Christian) plated two more with a triple to right center before scoring on a wild pitch, and freshman Grant Ashline (Naples, Florida/Naples) capped the offensive outburst with an RBI single.

Stonehill sophomore outfielder Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) led off the top of the fifth with a solo homer to center field, his second longball in as many games, and the Skyhawks added two more runs in the sixth. The two teams traded runs in the eighth, and Stonehill capped the scoring in the ninth on an RBI single by freshman first baseman Tyler Lamarre (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/North Kingstown).

Stonehill (9-3, 0-0 NE-10) will look to bounce back tomorrow with a doubleheader against Saint Thomas Aquinas at Alfond Stadium. The games are scheduled for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Rollins (12-11, 0-3 SSC) returns to conference play on Friday against Barry University.
