Stonehill Stays Hot With 12-6 Win At Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. (April 14, 2015) – After falling behind 4-3 in the third inning, Stonehill College outscored Assumption College 9-2 over the final six frames on its way to a 12-6 victory this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Rocheleau Field.

Stonehill matched its season high in runs (12) and hits (17) for the second straight day, following yesterday's 12-6 triumph at Bentley University. Six different Skyhawks posted multi-hit efforts, including a trio of three-hit performances.

Junior designated hitter Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Massachusetts/BC High) led the way at the plate, as he went 3-for-6 with a triple and four RBI. Junior outfielder Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) also recorded three hits to go with a walk, one RBI, two runs, and two stolen bases out of the leadoff spot, while classmate Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles) scored four runs and reached base four times with a walk and three singles. Seniors Christian Baglini (Milford, Connecticut/Notre Dame High) and Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) each recorded two hits, two walks, and one RBI while combining to score five runs, and sophomore Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) chipped in with two hits and one RBI.

Junior lefty Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro, Massachusetts/Middleboro) got the start for the Skyhawks and improved to 5-0 with the win after logging eight innings and giving up three earned runs on eight hits to go with four strikeouts and one walk.

Senior Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Massachusetts/Northbridge) and sophomore Matt Murphy (Wakefield, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendricken) recorded two hits each for the Greyhounds, while O'Donnell also drove in a pair of runs. Sophomore Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts/Shrewsbury) went 1-for-3 with a walk, a double, one RBI and one run, and freshman Bryan Guerrero (Boston, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) added a single and one RBI.


Junior Chris Hoyt went 3-for-5 with a walk and one RBI to go with two steals and two runs this afternoon. 

Junior Ronny Sampson (Jefferson, Massachusetts/West Boylston) took the loss for Assumption after giving up five runs on six hits while issuing four walks in four innings of work.

Stonehill recorded four of its 17 hits in the first inning and jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Fratus recorded an RBI single and three batters later senior catcher Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/Saint Bonaventure) plated two more with a single up the middle.

Assumption got a run back in the second on an RBI single by Guerrero, before taking a 4-3 lead with three runs in the third. Coggeshall got it started with an RBI double down the left field line, and O'Donnell followed with another RBI double before coming in to score on a wild pitch.

Stonehill regained its lead in the fifth with the help of three hits and two errors, as the Skyhawks plated three runs to go up 6-4. Hocking drove in a pair with a single to left field, and two batters later Lee beat out an infield single, scoring Fratus.

Stonehill tacked on two more runs in the sixth, before extending its lead to 10-4 in the top of the eighth on Hocking's second two-run single of the afternoon. The Greyhounds would get two back in the bottom of the eighth, before RBI singles by Hoyt and Baglini in the ninth capped the scoring.

Stonehill (19-9-1, 7-5 NE-10) will be off tomorrow, before returning to Lou Gorman Field to host Assumption on Thursday afternoon. The Greyhounds (8-17, 4-6 NE-10) remain at home tomorrow to take on Saint Anselm College at 3:30 p.m.
