Stonehill Rolls To 12-0 Win Over Assumption

EASTON, Mass. (April 28, 2015) – Stonehill College scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back on its way to a 12-0 victory over Assumption College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Lou Gorman Field.

Stonehill added two runs in the second inning and three in the third, before capping the scoring with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth. The Skyhawks have now won five straight games and 12 of their last 13, and are just a game out of second place in the division standings.

Junior Patrick Nicholson (Middleboro, Massachusetts/Middleboro) improved to 6-1 this season with the win after striking out four and scattering seven hits over seven scoreless frames. Seniors Ryan Rougeot (Cheshire, Connecticut/Cheshire) and Steve Pike (Stoughton, Massachusetts/Catholic Memorial) each tossed a perfect inning in relief.

Junior outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Massachusetts/Mount Saint Charles Academy) led the Skyhawks at the plate, going 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Senior shortstop Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Massachusetts/Plymouth North) went 2-for-4 with two walks and two runs, while freshman Rob Tuite (Auburn, New Hampshire/Portsmouth Abbey) recorded two singles and drove in a run. Junior outfielder Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Massachusetts/Xaverian Brothers) added a walk, a double, two RBI and two runs, and sophomore third baseman Steve Lee (Braintree, Massachusetts/Braintree) delivered a two-run double.

Freshman Andrew Jaehnig (Quincy, Massachusetts/BC High) recorded two of Assumption's seven hits, while senior Billy Johnson (Auburn, Massachusetts/Holy Name) walked and singled and classmate Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Massachusetts/Northbridge) chipped in with a double.

The Skyhawks wasted no time in getting their offense going, as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the first before taking a 1-0 lead when senior catcher Eric Schneider (Camarillo, California/Saint Bonaventure) was hit by a pitch. Sophomore first baseman Eddie Bowler (Hingham, Massachusetts/Hingham) came up next and reached on a fielder's choice, bringing in another run, and Lee followed with a two-run double to right field.

Stonehill tacked on two more runs in the second, before taking a commanding 9-0 lead with three runs in the third. Lee reached on an error with one out in the inning, and classmate Ben Monte (New Haven, Connecticut/Guilford) singled before Hoyt drove them both in with a double to right center. Hoyt would score two batters later, as Campbell ripped a double down the left field line.

The score remained the same for the next four frames, until Stonehill plated three more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Freshman Tyler Lamarre (North Kingstown, Rhode Island/North Kingstown) led off with a walk before eventually coming in to score on a wild pitch, while Tuite and classmate Joe Klingensmith (Topsfield, Massachusetts/Masconomet) recorded one RBI each in the inning.

Stonehill (28-10-1, 15-6 NE-10) is off for the next two days before returning to action on Friday afternoon against No. 20 Southern New Hampshire University at Lou Gorman Field. The Skyhawks and Penmen will then wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday. Assumption (8-28, 4-16 NE-10) returns home to host Merrimack College on Saturday afternoon.
