EASTON, Mass. (April 9, 2014) –Assumption College scored six times on six hits in the seventh inning on its way to a 6-3 win over Stonehill College this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball action at Lou Gorman Field.

Sophomore Chris Callahan (Southington, Conn./Holy Cross H.S.) went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer to lead Stonehill offensively, while classmate Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) and junior Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame H.S.) also posted 2-for-4 efforts at the plate.

Junior Jim Duff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) dropped to 6-1 with his first loss of the season after giving up six runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Duff cruised through the first six frames, allowing just two hits while striking out four, before running into trouble in the top of the seventh.

Assumption was led by freshman Mike Coggeshall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), who went 3-for-4 with three singles, and sophomore Colin Clancy (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford), who was 1-for-3 and drove in a pair of runs.

Sophomore Kevin O'Connor (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) earned the win for the Greyhounds after going seven innings and giving up three runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking one. Senior Ysander Figueroa (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Tech), who started the game in right field and recorded one RBI in the contest, also picked up his second save of the season after pitching a perfect ninth with a pair of strikeouts.

Stonehill had its share of opportunities to score early in the game, as the Skyhawks stranded runners at third base in the second, third, and fourth innings, but were unable to get hits with runners in scoring position.

After cruising through the first six frames and allowing just three Greyhounds to reach base, Assumption finally got to Duff in the top of the seventh. Juniors Billy Johnson (Auburn, Mass./Holy Name) and Greg O'Donnell (Northbridge, Mass./Northbridge) started the rally with consecutive singles to lead off the inning, and Coggeshall followed with another single to load the bases with nobody out. Clancy came up next and plated the game's first two runs with a double to right field, and sophomore Tom Paine (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc) increased Assumption's lead to 3-0 with an RBI single on the next play. After another RBI single and a walk to reload the bases, junior Steve Pike (Stoughton, Mass./Catholic Memorial) came on in relief of Duff. Pike got the Skyhawks out of the inning, but not before the Greyhounds had added two more runs to go up 6-0.

Stonehill got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning on Callahan's two-run shot to right field and another in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by senior Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North), but Figueroa retired the Skyhawks in order in the ninth.

Stonehill (16-13, 6-6 NE-10) will be off until this weekend, when the Skyhawks head to Saint Anselm College for a three game series against their NE-10 Northeast Division rivals. Stonehill and Saint Anselm are scheduled to square off on Saturday at 2 p.m., before playing a pair of games on Sunday starting at noon. Assumption (9-10, 5-6 NE-10) will be back in action tomorrow, as the Greyhounds are set to host Franklin Pierce University at 3:30 p.m.
