Stonehill Splits Two Games At Mercy


Junior Christian Baglini led Stonehill at the plate today, as he went 4-for-6 with two RBI as the Skyhawks split a pair of contests with Mercy College.

Skyhawks drop game one, 2-0, before responding with 6-0 victory in game two

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (April 17, 2014) – The Stonehill College baseball team split a pair of seven-inning contests with Mercy College today in non-conference action at Mavericks Field. Mercy won the opener, 2-0, before Stonehill responded with a 6-0 victory in game two.

Mercy won today's opener on the strength of a complete-game shutout effort from junior Bryan Greig (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South). Greig recorded seven strikeouts and allowed six hits in his seven innings of work.

Senior Charlie DeFrancesco (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) started his first contest of the season for the Skyhawks, and he took the loss after going five innings and allowing just two runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out five and walking three.

Junior Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame) led Stonehill offensively with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate, while classmate Eric Schneider (Camarillo, Calif./St. Bonaventure) recorded a double and sophomore Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) added a single and a stolen base.

The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when junior Sal Palumbo (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) delivered an RBI single with runners on first and second. Palumbo, who accounted for two of Mercy's five hits in the contest, gave the Mavericks a 2-0 advantage two innings later when he doubled home sophomore Scott Hagan (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck). Both of Palumbo's RBI hits came with two outs in the inning.

After being shut out in the opener, Stonehill responded with six runs in game two to earn a split. Freshman Jeremy Roberts (Reading, Mass./Malden Catholic) picked up the win for the Skyhawks after going five shutout innings and allowing just three hits to go with three strikeouts and no walks. Junior Steve Pike (Stoughton, Mass./Catholic Memorial) pitched a perfect sixth inning, and classmate Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) struck out the side in the seventh to end the contest.

Campbell led the Skyhawk offense, as he went 3-for-4 with one RBI, while Baglini was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) added a pair of singles as well.

Freshman Matt Nalbone (Islip, N.Y./Islip) took the loss for Mercy after starting the contest and giving up six runs in four innings of work.

After three scoreless frames, Stonehill put three runs on the board in the fourth inning. Senior Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Hoyt, while classmate Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) recorded a two-run double, scoring Campbell and Baglini.

The Skyhawks then scored three more times the following inning to take a commanding 6-0 lead. Campbell knocked in Stonehill's first run of the frame with a single, and later in the inning Baglini plated two more with another single.

Stonehill is now 3-1 against Mercy this season, after defeating the Mavericks twice on March 14th in Fort Pierce, Florida.

Stonehill (19-15, 8-7 NE-10) will be off tomorrow before returning to action on Saturday with a pair of contests against Saint Michael's College. Mercy (11-19, 7-8 ECC) will be back in action on Tuesday, April 22nd when the Mavericks are set to host Nyack College.
