Golden Lions outscore Skyhawks 3-0 in last three innings

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (February 23, 2014) – The Stonehill College baseball team wrapped up its four-day, five-game trip at the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge today with a 5-4 loss in non-conference action to Dowling College.

Sophomore outfielder Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) posted his third multi-hit game this season, as he went 3-for-4 with two singles, one double, one walk, and one RBI.

Junior Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame) went 2-for-4 with one RBI, while sophomore second baseman Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) also had a 2-for-4 effort at the plate. Stonehill recorded 11 hits in the contest, but stranded ten runners on base, while Dowling had 10 hits and left eight men on base.

Sophomore Mike Krupczak (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) started the game for Stonehill, going six innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out three. Senior Charles DeFrancesco (Lincoln, Mass./Lincoln Sudbury) took the loss for the Skyhawks, after giving up four hits and three earned runs in an inning of work.

Dowling was led offensively by junior catcher Daniel Parise (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) and sophomore outfielder Charlee Rodriguez (Queens, N.Y./Central Islip). Parise went 2-for-4 at the dish with a single, a double and an RBI, while Rodriguez went 2-for-3 with a single, a triple, an RBI and two runs.

Junior Tyler Hardison (Shirley, N.Y./Longwood) earned the win for the Golden Lions after entering the game in the sixth inning and going three frames without allowing a single hit to seal the contest for Dowling.

Stonehill got its offense going early, as Campbell and Hoyt led off the first inning with a pair of singles. Campbell would come around to score on Baglini's RBI single later in the frame, and Stonehill then took a 2-0 lead after senior first baseman Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Stonehill and Dowling scored one run each in both the fourth and fifth innings, as Stonehill held a 4-2 advantage after five frames. The Golden Lions loaded the bases in the seventh inning on a single and two hit by pitches, and senior infielder JC Brandmaier (Bellmore, N.Y./Mempham) came through with the game-tying hit, as he drove in two runs with an RBI single. The following inning, Rodriguez drove in the game-winning run for Dowling with a groundout to second base.

Stonehill opened its season on Thursday with a 4-0 blanking of Felician College, and followed that up by shutting out Caldwell College 8-0 on Friday night. The Skyhawks then split a pair of games yesterday, with a 4-2 win over Molloy College and a 2-1 loss to Pfieffer University, before capping their trip with a 5-4 loss to Dowling today.

Stonehill (3-2, 0-0 Northeast-10) will be off until March 8th, when the Skyhawks head back down south for ten games in Florida, seven of which will be played on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. Stonehill will open that trip against Saint Thomas Aquinas College on March 8th, and conclude it with a doubleheader against Mercy College on March 14th in Fort Pierce, Fla. Dowling (2-2, 0-0 ECC) will be back in action on Wednesday at NE-10 foe and in-state rival Adelphi University.
