Three-run fifth rallies Ravens past Skyhawks ten-hit attack

EASTON, Mass. (April 22, 2010) – Franklin Pierce University, ranked 30th in this week’s Collegiate Baseball magazine Division II poll, used a three-run fifth inning to fuel a 5-1 victory over Stonehill College, ranked seventh in this week’s NCAA Division II East Regional poll, in Northeast-10 Conference baseball action at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field tonight.

Freshman Joe Flynn (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) pitched seven strong innings to earn the win (5-2), allowing just the one earned run while working around nine hits with eight strikeouts and no walks over seven innings. Freshman Rob Blanc (Sandy Hook, Conn./Trumbull) and senior Heath Wasylow (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) combined to allow just a hit and a walk with five strikeouts, three by Blanc, over the final two scoreless innings.

Senior Phil Hendricks (Pittsfield, Maine/Maine Central Institute) hit 2-for-4 with a double and run scored for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Nick LaCroix (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) was 1-for-3 with a double, stolen base, RBI and run scored, while senior Cody Kauffman (Blue Bell, Pa./ Wissahickon) batted 1-for-4 with a double and RBI.


Sophomore Michael White had two hits and a stolen base at the plate, while also throwing seven strong innings on the mound for the Skyhawks.

Senior Rob Von Stein (Trumbull, Conn./Trumbull) led Stonehill’s ten-hit attack as he finished 1-for-3 with a triple and RBI. Sophomore Michael Magnussen (Carver, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) hit 2-for-4 with a run scored, while classmate Rich McHugh (Pembroke, Mass./Thayer Academy) batted 2-for-4.

Sophomore lefthander Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) took the loss (3-2), allowing three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and a walk over seven innings. He also finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base.

White faced just one over the minimum through the first four innings before Hendricks and Lacroix led off the fifth with back-to-back doubles to put Franklin Pierce on the board. Kauffman also added an RBI double for the Ravens, while junior Eric Pearson (Webster, N.H./Merrimack Valley) added an RBI single. The Ravens broke the game open with a two-run eighth. Junior Derek Ingui (Sterling, Mass./Wachusett Regional) had a single and later scored on a wild pitch, while post grad Mike Augustine (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Stonehill opened the scoring in the fourth as Magnussen singled through the right side with two out and scored when Von Stein followed with a triple down the rightfield line.

Stonehill (18-16, 11-9 NE-10) returns to action on Saturday when it visits The College of Saint Rose for an NE-10 doubleheader starting at noon. The Skyhawks return home next Wednesday, April 28, to host Saint Anselm College for a Northeast-10 matchup at Lou Gorman Field at 3:30 p.m. Franklin Pierce (28-11-1, 14-5-1 NE-10) hosts Assumption College for a Northeast-10 doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
