Bruno Shows a Speedy Side

Angelo Bruno Jr. leads the Stonehill College baseball team in most of the significant offensive categories. He's tops in home runs, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, walks and on-base percentage. A powerfully built first baseman, it's not shocking to see Bruno at the top of those lists.

But stolen bases? Really? Bruno, 6-feet, 1-inch and 205 pounds, has swiped eight bases in 11 attempts. The next highest on the team is five. Not surprisingly, the junior from Norwalk High says his speed on the basepaths comes from a rigorous workout program. "I wasn't much of a stolen base threat last year,'' Bruno says. "I lost some weight and gained some speed. It's just picking the right time and the right opportunity. I've also been trying to surprise some teams."

Bruno's big year has the Skyhawks (22-16) in the race for a Northeast-10 playoff berth. The top six teams in the conference make the tournament, and Stonehill is currently fifth. Bruno said the team has missed the conference playoffs in recent years and it was his goal to help the team get back to the postseason. "I know this team has the ability to even make a run at winning it,'' Bruno says. "One of the goals from the start was to get to the playoffs. We've had the potential in past years but haven't acted upon it. This year has been a different story."

Bruno has been a big part of it. He has socked eight home runs (second in the NE-10) and has 35 RBIs (sixth in the NE-10). He had a huge day Saturday in a doubleheader sweep of Saint Rose, collecting four hits, five RBIs, a triple and three runs scored. "I've felt great all year,'' Angelo says. "A lot of it is maturing and just gaining experience. It's gotten easier over the past few years. I've gotten more confident at the plate."

Angelo says he's likely to stay in Massachusetts during the summer to play baseball in a collegiate league. He's also a professional prospect and could even be drafted this summer. "That's been my goal since I started playing,'' says Angelo, whose father is the coach of the Norwalk High School team. " I'm just going to continue to work hard and see what happens."
