Greyhounds post 8-5 victory in game one, follow with 6-4 win in nightcap

AUBURNDALE, Fla. (March 8, 2010) - Assumption College swept a non-conference doubleheader with Stonehill College in baseball action today. The Greyhounds posted an 8-5 victory in game one, before notching a 6-4 win in the nightcap.

Assumption broke a 5-5 tie with two runs in the fourth and added an insurance run in the sixth to claim the 8-5 win in game one.

Senior Derek Migrants (Ayer, Mass./Ayer) helped pace the Assumption offense as he hit 2-for-4 with a triple, stolen base, two runs scored and two RBI. Junior Wally Derosier (Shrewsbury, Mass./Holy Name) was 2-for-3 with a double, run scored and two RBI, while classmate Mike Foley (Worcester, Mass./St. John's) finished 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Junior righthander Joe Green (Worcester, Mass./St. John's) picked up the win (1-0) on the mound, allowing five earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk over seven innings. Senior Tim Dupuis (West Suffield, Conn./Suffield) picked up his second save of the year with a scoreless seventh, allowing a hit with a strikeout.

Junior Angelo Bruno (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) led Stonehill by hitting 2-for-4 with a double, stolen base and RBI. Senior Shane Franz (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) batted 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, while classmate Mitch Davis (Bow, N.H./Bow) finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

Junior righthander Shane Penzone (Hudson, Mass./Hudson Catholic) suffered the loss (1-3) on the mound for the Skyhawks, allowing seven runs, five earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and two walks over three innings. Classmate Dan Corrigan (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth) pitched three strong innings of relief, allowing just an earned run on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks over three innings.

Trailing 5-1 entering the fourth, Stonehill rallied to knot the score at 5-5 with a four-run frame. Franz delivered a two-run single to center, before Davis tied the game with a two-run single to left. Assumption regained the lead in the home half of the fourth with a pair of sacrifice flies, and then added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI double to right.

Assumption scored five runs over their first two at bats and made it stand for the 6-4 win in game two.

Migrants against led Assumption by hitting 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBI, while Derosier batted 1-for-3 with a triple, RBI and two runs scored.

Senior Andrew Quinn (Taunton, Mass./Coyle & Cassidy) picked up the win in relief, allowing just a hit with three strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Junior Joe Martini (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) pitched the first 3.1 innings, yielding three runs, two earned, on six hits with two strikeouts and a walk over 3.1 innings.

Senior Matt Skane (Mashpee, Mass./Mashpee) led Stonehill by hitting 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Junior Nick Nardacci (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Junior righthander Nick Peters (West Newton, Mass/.Catholic Memorial) took the loss (0-1), surrendering five earned runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. Sophomore Michael White (Lisbon, N.H./Lisbon Regional) kept the Skyhawks in the game by allowing in just an earned run on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 4.1 innings of relief.

After breaking through with a run in the top of the first, the Greyhounds looked to take control with a four-run second. The Greyhounds scored on two runs on bases-loaded walks, another on a bases-loaded hit by pitch, while Migrants posted an RBI single.

Stonehill closed within two runs with a run in the second and two more in the third as Nardacci and Skane posted RBI hits. The teams then traded single runs in the sixth and seventh.  

Stonehill (1-4, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday for a non-conference matchup with Bentley University at Southard Stadium on the campus of Saint Leo University at noon. Assumption (5-1, 0-0 NE-10) plays a doubleheader against Seton Hill University tomorrow beginning at 9:30 a.m.
